Capitals Sign Sergei Shumakov To One-Year, Two-Way Entry-Level Contract Worth $925,000

The Washington Capitals signed Sergei Shumakov to a one-year, entry-level contract worth $925,000, the team announced on Saturday morning. Shumakov was a free agent in the KHL.

Last season with CSKA Moscow, Shumakov scored 40 points in 48 KHL games, which translates into 51 points in the NHL in a full 82 game season. He tied for his team lead in points and +/- (+28), was second in goals (17) and assists (23).

The 25-year old (who will turn 26 on Tuesday) winger hails from Chelyabinsk, Russia, the same hometown as Capitals’ center Evgeny Kuznetsov.

Shumakov will likely play on the third line, meaning Andre Burakovsky or Brett Connolly could be demoted to the fourth line or get traded. Connolly can become an unrestricted free agent and Burakovsky can become a restricted free agent after the season.

Shumakov will become a restricted free agent next summer and can sign a contract extension as soon as January 1.

The Washington Capitals have signed forward Sergei Shumakov to a one-year, two-way entry-level contract, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today. Shumakov’s contract will carry an average annual value of $925,000.

Shumakov, 25, tied for first on CSKA Moscow with 40 points (17g, 23a) in 47 games in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) during the 2017-18 season and tied for 19th in points in the KHL. The 6’0″, 196-pound forward added another four points (2g, 2a) in 11 playoff games with CSKA Moscow, who reached the Gagarin Cup Final last season. The Chelyabinsk, Russia, native also led the KHL in plus/minus rating (+28) and was named the KHL player of the week on Nov. 8, 2017. Shumakov made his KHL debut with Sibir Novosibirsk in the 2011-12 season and has 145 points (74g, 71a) in 282 career games.
