The Washington Capitals announced on Saturday morning that they have sent forward Shane Gersich down to the AHL’s Hershey Bears and have placed forwards Liam O’Brien and Riley Barber on waivers with the intention of also sending them down to Hershey.

The Capitals are now down to 15 forwards, nine defensemen, and two goalies. You can find the updated training camp roster here.

Gersich, 21, appeared in three regular season games with the Capitals last season and posted an assist after signing with Washington on March 23. Gersich also appeared in two playoff games with the Capitals but was held scoreless. He tallied 43 goals, 77 points, and a +31 rating in 117 career games at the University of North Dakota, including 13 goals and 29 points in 40 games last season. He also recorded a goal in four preseason appearances with the Capitals.

O’Brien, 23, was signed to a one-year, two-way contract last July. In 69 games with the Bears last season, O’Brien tallied 17 goals, which was good for second on the team, and 79 penalty minutes, which was third on the team. In 17 career games with Washington, O’Brien has tallied a goal, two points, and 28 penalty minutes.

Barber, 24, also signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Caps last July. He led Hershey with 20 goals last season and was fourth in points. Barber has earned 120 points (59 goals) in 173 career AHL games with Hershey and was named Hershey’s Rookie of the Year in 2016 following a 55-point season (26 goals). He has appeared in three career games with the Capitals. Barber recorded a goal and two points in three preseason games this month.
