Oshie, Hagelin Miss First Day Of Capitals’ Training Camp; Hagelin Out Long-Term

Washington Capitals left-wing Carl Hagelin has an undisclosed injury unrelated to the eye injury he sustained in practice last season and will be out long-term, according to the AP’s Stephen Whyno. A recovery timeline for the 34-year-old is unknown.

Hagelin’s absence as well as Johan Larsson’s departure in the offseason leaves an opening on the Capitals’ fourth-line and top penalty-killing unit. Axel Jonsson-Fjallby, Beck Malenstyn, and Joe Snively are among those in line to earn that role.

Hagelin averaged 1:54 on the penalty-kill (second among Capitals forwards) and earned three goals and 14 points in 53 games last season. The Capitals could have $2.75 million in extra salary cap relief but the team would need to save it if they expect Hagelin to play for them this season.

Right-wing T.J. Oshie had surgery on an core injury after last season ended and will not be out long-term. The 35-year-old is expected to participate in Friday’s training camp activities.

Oshie missed 48 games with numerous injuries last season and finished with 11 goals and 25 points. He led the Capitals with six goals and added an assist in last Spring’s first-round Stanley Cup Playoff series.

The Capitals open the preseason on Sunday against the Buffalo Sabres and the regular season and Wednesday, October 12 vs. the Boston Bruins.

    What is a “core” procedure?

Hags is out long term for an injury NOT related to his eye? Sorry, too many strikes against. Appreciate what he has done for the Caps, but it is time to move on. If he won’t retire and Caps can’t make a trade, then he needs to go on LTIR so that we can use his salary space.

Totally agree as this team needs to get some youth into the lineup.

Too bad for Hags. I was actually getting excited to have him back on the 4th line as he is a great fit there (albeit expensive).

But yeah, he should probably consider retiring. Best for his health and helps the Caps.
