Alexander Semin, who played for the Washington Capitals from 2003-04 through 2011-12, has just been appointed President of his hometown team, Sokol Krasnoyarsk of the VHL, as part of a management restructuring there.
In addition, a new General Manager/Sports Director of the team was also appointed, Alexey Yashkin, a native of Krasnoyarsk and father of another former Capital, Dmitrij Jaskin, who played for the Capitals during the 2018-19 season.
The personnel changes were announced by Denis Petrovsky, Minister of Sports of the Krasnoyarsk Territory.
“Today, we are undergoing changes in the Sokol hockey club in terms of updating the structure and composition of the leadership,” said Petrovsky. “The position of president appears in the structure of the club, it will be our illustrious fellow countryman Alexander Valeryevich Semin. His tasks will include work on determining the club’s strategy and, of course, work on attracting additional extrabudgetary sources of funding. We understand that the very name of Alexander Semin is already a brand that will attract an additional audience, advertisers and potential sponsors.”

Semin expressed his gratitude as he accepted his new position of President.
“First of all, I would like to thank Alexander Viktorovich Uss [Governor of Krasnoyarsk Territory] for entrusting me with this position. Perhaps, thanks to the recent All-Star Game with filled stands, the leadership of the Krasnoyarsk Territory has grown even more interested in ice hockey. After all, my farewell match showed that fans in Krasnoyarsk love this sport very much. The most important thing now is to play well! At the club, I will be faced with the task of only going forward, showing the best results and doing everything better than before. I think this is my main goal. I will also be involved in attracting extra-budgetary funds to the club in order to improve its work,” said Semin.

The Capitals originally drafted Semin in the first round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft with pick #13 overall. He was one of the more important players during the Capitals’ “Young Guns” era with his best year coming in 2009-10 where he scored 40 goals and had 44 assists.
During his tenure with the Capitals, he scored 197 goals and had 211 assists. After leaving the Capitals, he played with the Carolina Hurricanes and Montreal Canadiens before continuing his career in the KHL. He played for Metallurg Magnitogorsk and HC Vityaz near Moscow, winning the Gagarin Cup in 2016 with a team that included former Capitals Oscar Osala and Wojtek Wolski and goalie Ilya Samsonov.
Semin’s last season as a player was with HC Vityaz in the KHL in 2020-21. He announced his retirement as a player this summer and held a Farewell to Hockey charity game to celebrate his retirement. In attendance for that game were Alex Ovechkin, Dmitry Orlov, and Pavel Datsyuk.

Semin in a suit jacket something you don’t see everyday.
Hmmm, is this a real decision making position or a publicity figurehead position?
He was already an assistant to the GM last season so had already done work in that department. In a way, he’s the “young blood” on their management team.
