A Tale of Two Alex’s: Former Capital Alexander Semin And Current Capitals Prospect Alexander Alexeyev Face Off in KHL Action

KHL

In the world of hockey, paths of players often cross whether in the National Hockey League or elsewhere. Although right wing Alexander Semin has not been associated with the Washington Capitals organization since his departure in 2012, from time-to-time, the now Kontinetal Hockey League forward occasionally finds his way back into a story involving his former club. Such an incident occurred today when his KHL club, HC Vityaz Podolsk, matched up against Salavat Ulayev UFA, the team to which the Capitals are loaning defensive prospect and fellow former first-round pick Alexander Alexeyev.

Salavat Ulayev UFA scored early in the first period to take a 1-0 lead, but midway through the second period, Alexeyev was knocked off the puck which eventually led to a goal by Semin.

The quote from the KHL’s English Twitter account stated: “It’s not good when Alex Semin is at your doorstep.’

Vityaz Podolsk pulled ahead five minutes later and maintained that 2-1 lead through the second intermission.

During the third period, however, Salavat Ulayev UFA took the lead again, tying it early in the period and taking the lead around the halfway mark of the frame. The lead would prove to be VERY short lived, as less than a minute later, Vityaz Podolsk tied the score at 3-3. With just a little over a minute to go in the game, Semin scored his second goal of the game, a marker that sealed the game for his club. Vityaz beat Salavat Ulayev UFA by a 4-3 score. Alexeyev was pulled out of position on the goal, allowing a centering pass to Semin.

Semin ended the contest with two goals, while Alexeyev ended up as minus-2 for the game and on the ice for both of Semin’s goals. Vityaz Podolsk had bounced back from an earlier 6-5 loss to Salavat Ulayev UFA that took place on September 26. Alexeyev had recorded his first KHL point in that particular game.
