Center Jay Beagle signed a four-year contract worth $12 million ($3 million AAV) with the Vancouver Canucks, the team announced on Sunday afternoon.

The Canucks also signed former Dallas Stars’ fourth line grinder Antoine Roussel to a four-year contract worth $13 million ($3.25 million AAV) and former Boston Bruins’ forward Tim Schaller to a two-year contract worth $3.8 million ($1.9 million AAV).

Beagle, 32, was the third-longest tenured Capital on the 2017-18 roster, joining the team in 2008. Only winger Alex Ovechkin (2005) and center Nicklas Backstrom (2007) have been on the Capitals’ roster longer than Beagle.

During his career in Washington, Beagle tallied 51 goals and 116 points in 471 games and eight goals and 19 points in 85 playoff games. He was a reliable penalty killer and faceoff specialist, who got trusted to take draws in crucial moments. Beagle won 56.1% of the faceoffs he took over his tenure as a Capital. He was a +11.

In 2017-18, Beagle recorded seven goals and 22 points along with a +3 rating in 79 regular season games and two goals and eight points along with a +7 rating in 23 playoff games. He won and 58.52% of the faceoffs he took during the regular season and 60.3% of the ones he took during the playoffs.

Beagle said during breakdown day that he would be willing to wait until the Capitals re-signed their priority guys before signing his own contract with the team but that ultimately he would have to do what was best for his family.

Beagle’s best season in Washington came in 2016-17 when he tallied a career-high 13 goals and 30 points in 81 games. He also had a career-high +20 rating that season.

With Beagle gone, Chandler Stephenson or Travis Boyd could take his spot on the fourth line next season.

The Vancouver Canucks come to Capital One Arena on Tuesday, February 5 for Beagle’s homecoming. The Capitals also visit the Canucks at Rogers Arena in Vancouver on Monday, October 22.
