With the the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline four days away at 3 PM ET on Friday, NoVa Caps provides a round-up for all of the latest rumors surrounding the Washington Capitals and the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline.
According to The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta, Washington has received plenty of interest in their pending unrestricted free agents such as center Lars Eller, left-wing Conor Sheary, defenseman Nick Jensen, etc. He also said that Washington has had contract talks with Jensen in addition to pending unrestricted free agent defensemen Trevor Van Riemsdyk and Erik Gustafsson on extensions. There is a chance that a couple pending unrestricted free agents stick around after Friday.
Pagnotta also wrote on Sunday that Washington is ”going to augment their roster going into next season” and reiterated that the team has “no interest” in rebuilding with captain Alex Ovechkin on the roster.
On Monday’s episode of 32 Thoughts, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said that “I do think [the Ottawa Senators] called the Capitals about Jensen and [Van Riemsdyk]… I do believe there was some potentially re-engagement on Dumba, but that obviously has happened either, but I don’t think those are the only ones.” It is no secret that Ottawa has been looking for a blueliner dating back to last offseason.
Friedman also added that the Dallas Stars are among the teams interested in Eller and Toronto Maple Leafs are regarding Jensen.
Regarding Washington’s interest in Arizona Coyotes defenseman Jakob Chychrun, Friedman confirmed it and that the organization is weighing the cost of adding him.
Pagnotta tweeted on Monday morning that it “doesn’t sound like there’s an extension to be had right now [between Washington and left-wing] Conor Sheary, a pending UFA. He [and center] Lars Eller have drawn trade interest. [Washington has] had talks with Gustafsson, [Van Riemsdyk, and] Jensen’s camps, and as I mentioned yesterday, no deals could lead to more [defensemen moving] out of [Washington].”

I really like Jensen, but he’s going to be 33 before next season. It’s probably in the best interest of the future to trade Jensen and recoup a first rounder that could be flipped for more talent on the roster for next season and beyond.
Yeah, age is the one snag for me as well. He does seem to have low mileage, as far as his career experience. But if he wants more than 2 years, I guess we gotta part ways. This is his last chance to make big $$ in his career, so I suspect he wants to see free agency.
I think that was the reason that Orlov ws traded he wanted more then a 2 or 3 year deal and also big bucks. I like Jensen and like you said has low mileage however if we can get a nice pick for him I say…..Thanks for your time and enjoyed watching you play here but enjoy your new tam! I dont see Jensen bringing a #1 maybe a #2 and a #3 and no flipping picks for players; keep the picks and use them to obtain talent in the draft. Yes a rebuild may take several years (I’m thinking around 5 or 6) before they become legitimate Cup contenders again. The owner has to accept several years without the playoffs and maybe not stroking his ego with Ovie besting The Great Ones’ record to become legit contenders in 5 or 6 years rather than milking the next several years just to try to get Ovie a record.

Totally agree and NOW is the time to act on getting a ton of extra picks for our UFA’s and bring up the young men from Hershey to fill slots. Maybe he can even get something for Craig Smith. While we are talking about trading players; how about trading Kuemper and letting Lindgren be the #1 and bringing up either Fucale and Shepard (have 3 goalies and play each one once every third game and one gets scratched every game) as they are both UFA after this season and the Caps need to see what they have and at the same time unload salary. Also there are several players in Hershey that are UFA and the Caps ned to see if they are keepers for a rebuild or not, players such as Borgstrom and Carisson.

Let me throw out a dark horse candidate for the Caps to acquire: John Klingberg. If you think about it, it makes sense. The Caps season really went off the rails when Carlson went down. Klingberg could be the 2nd unit PP QB, and if Carlson is missing for an extended period, then he fills in nicely. Cons: on the wrong side of age 30, not great defensively. Still, if you can get him cheap, I say do it. No better time to buy low on a player like him.
If he is on the wrong side of 30 they why get him at all? Also if trying to rebuild why obtain players like it is a retool? Just to get someone cheap is not a reason to get him and if looking at a rebuild why get him at all?
OK Druid, I have to ask:
What part of “Leonsis has said ‘we want to remain competitive while Alex chases Gretzky’ s record'” are you not getting? What part of “McLellan is trying to retool on the fly, and is not interested in a full rebuild, but will listen to offers for UFAs” don’t you understand? What part of “McLellan is interested in signing Nick Jensen and Erik Gustafsson to extensions” is beyond your comprehension?
You may as well face it, chum…..this isn’t a rebuild! Leonsis ain’t gonna do it. So I’m throwing out a name that the team may be interested in, to replace either Jensen or TVR

Learn to read, Scooter. I didn’t advocate trading a 1st for Klingberg. I didn’t advocate trading ANYTHING for Klingberg, just thought he’d be a good acquisition. He’ll be a free agent over the summer. By cheap, I meant salary. I’m trying to be practical, I WANT a rebuild, but if I’m not going to get, I’m not going to whine about it. If BMac is going to retool, and add veteran pieces, as it seems he will, then it should be pieces that fit. I think Klingberg will fit.
It’s not flip flopping. I can simultaneously want a rebuild, yet see that it won’t happen, and thus express my opinion on ways to retool. Your problem is, just like Horn73 from the opposite end, you’re seeing only one side of the issue. I’m not that one dimensional.

Frankly you are not even worth discussing things wit. Read you posts on other articles where you say trade the 1st from Boston for Chychuren. Also you don’t consider salary in most of your traded and acquisitions. Its not just the draft picks but the salary that the Caps will have to pay for players the net several years to get older player to come here. As for your idea of Klingberg, why invest in another player who will be 31 when next season starts, In the past 5 years he has not played a full season due to injury. So you want to stock this team with older players (which we have noe) and players with an injury history? Where are you getting your ideas from, Fantasy hockey? As for my BS in clinical Psyc at GW, Masters in Clinical and Forensic Psychology from University of Denver and a PHD in Behavioral and Child and Adolescent Psychology from The U, or for those Unfamiliar the University of Utah where I was able to work at Intermountain Health Car with children, both latency and adolescence. So where did you get you degree in sports management?

The problem here is that Klingberg isn’t that good anymore. Caps would need to pay more than you think because ANA would have to retain salary. I think the Caps have come to terms with the fact that they are not making the playoffs this year so why trade assets for a pending UFA defenseman who is old and bad defensively? Adding Klingberg makes no sense to me
That’s with a trade. He’ll be a UFA over the summer, and the Caps are pretty well signaling that they’re giving up on this season. So I think he’d be a decent addition over the summer. Not great, but you’re not gonna get great for bargain basement prices
Caps need to be aggressive sellers here. Looking at what Toronto gave up to Chicago. I feel like the Caps could’ve gotten more for Orlov but they need to get max value for their remaining UFA’s. This is the year they need to be all-in sellers.
I agree, but both Leonsis and MacLellan have said they won’t rebuild during Ovi’s final three years. Prospects take 2-3 years to develop on a good timeline, longer in most cases. That’s not gonna happen in time to stay competitive with Ovi.
Our pick is going to be high in this years draft, and Miro only has one more season in Russia. There’s a high chance both these prospects are NHL ready within 1-2 seasons.
For the sake of a personal record the owner and Gm are going to let this team sink into a decade of being non-contenders and irrelevant. The purpose of a team sport is team goals not feeding the ego of a Napoleonic owner as he puts a scoring record above a team goal of the Cup. I’m sure that all the players including Ovie would rather have another or for some 1st ring than a scoring title.
I hear y’all comments on Jensen’s age…but in the league today…teams can’t have too much speed. Nick’s got plenty…he’s durable and I think he’s got more to give offensively. I’d like to see him stay a few more years.
Well, the reports are that Brian McClellan is negotiating with teams while negotiating with these (including Jensen) players’ agents and if Bmac gets an agreement, he will resign them, if not, out they go.
Rick, sorry to say but Backy has lost a step and no longer has that extra gear he had before surgery. Its sad to watch him play now compared to 4 or 5 years ago. It is also sad that he has 2 years left on a contract that pays him $9.2 mil a year. At 35 and after major surgery how much more does he have to give? Its sad that he’s not going to retire and give the Caps some salary relief and let a younger, healthy player with speed have his slot.
AS for Jensen, like the way he plays and dont see him getting that last big long contract here so time to trade him just like Orlov.
Rick, I’m with you on this (Jensen). Ideally he would re-sign for 3 years.
Unfortunately this is last chance at a big payday. He didn’t earn a lot in his early years, so I fear he will definitely want to test free agency and get that one final big payday for $ and term. Can’t blame family guys for doing this.
It will be interesting to see how important dc, family life is and what the outcome will be.

Of course he’d never give Ovechkin the puck and would try to score another few hundred goals himself, but Ted would definitely get butts in those seats, and could extend the chase for the career goals record for decades! A self-perpetuating money-printing machine!
