The Washington Capitals placed forward Sergei Shumakov on unconditional waivers for purposes of contract termination, according to Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post.

The Capitals signed Shumakov, 26, to a one-year contract on September 1. He arrived at training camp late due to visa issues.
Shumakov did not make the Capitals roster and was assigned to the AHL’s Hershey Bears after a few rounds of cuts.
Last season with CSKA Moscow of the KHL, Shumakov scored 40 points in 48 games, which translates into 51 points in the NHL in a full 82 game season. He tied for his team lead in points and +/- (+28), was second in goals (17) and assists (23).
Shumakov tallied three goals, four points, and a +3 rating in 10 games in Hershey this season.
The native of Chelyabinsk, Russia, also home to Capitals center Evgeny Kuznetsov, will likely be headed back to the KHL in a matter of days.

Having watched every minute of every Bears game so far this season, I was left very unimpressed with his level of play. he was injured, so I gave him the benefit of doubt. He may have also reinjured an arm in last game.
Im shocked.. I mean 10 whole games how can you judge a guy off 10 games? They clearly pulled the plug too early. Like I said earlier theres plenty of turds on the bears roster never making it on the Caps that have played 25-30 games. If the caps just have played it out& the kid scores 20 goals until seasons end, thats something to work with. But to just throw him away? What did you expect 50 goals in 10 games? Ridiculous
Seams a bit early to me as well, unless 1) they’ve seen enough or 2) he sustained another injury, or 3) he wanted to leave/return to CSKA. Those are my guesses.
I’d say 10 games (plus the time lost to injury) was too soon to give up on the guy (or in Shumakov’s case, too soon for him to give up playing in America). Unless he figured he wasn’t getting enough time on ice or wasn’t regarded “high” enough by the management.
The McPhee era of bad player decisions is long gone. Give our management the benefit of trust that this guy is not Capital material. Read what the Hershey fan above thought of him.
