Kuznetsov’s Overtime Heroics Down the Jets 3-2: Alex Ovechkin Gets to 600 Career Goals

After a week-long trip to California, the Capitals returned home to take on the Winnipeg Jets at Capital One Arena on Monday evening.  After Ovechkin’s pair of goals and Evgeny Kuznetsov’s superb overtime effort, the Capitals defeated the Jets 3-2 in overtime.  The Capitals will be back in action on Thursday and Friday for a home-and-home series with the New York Islanders.

STARTERS

Philipp Grubauer (9-8-3, 2.25 GAA, .925 sv%) got his 3rd consecutive start in goal for the Capitals.  Connor Hellebuyck (35-11-8, 2.38 GAA, .923 sv%) got the start in goal for the Jets.  The Capitals starting forward lines and defensive pairs:

FIRST PERIOD

Capitals received a lengthy 5-on-3 powerplay in the opening minutes of the frame.  Ovechkin scored his 41st goal on the powerplay 4:35 into the game.  Carlson and Backstrom grabbed the helpers on Ovechkin’s powerplay tally.

Nikolaj Ehlers scored his 27th goal of the season about a minute later off a bad neutral zone turnover, which tied the game at 1.

After a 20-minute penalty-filled period, the Capitals led the Jets 14-8 in shots on goal.  The score was tied at 1 after 20 minutes.

SECOND PERIOD

Alex Ovechkin scored his 42nd goal of the season and 600th career goal 3:53 into the frame.  Wilson and Kuznetsov grabbed the helpers on Ovechkin’s historic goal milestone.

The Capitals outshot the Jets 13-10 in the second period.  The Capitals outshot the Jets 27-18 through 40 minutes.  The score was 2-1 Capitals after 40 minutes of play.

THIRD PERIOD

Patrick Laine scored his 41st goal of the season 5:02 into the frame.  The game is tied at 2.  The Jets carried the momentum halfway through the third frame.  The Jets outshot the Capitals 10-9 in the third frame.  After 60 minutes of play, the Capitals outshot the Jets 36-28.

OVERTIME

The Capitals received a powerplay 19 seconds into the frame.  They were not able to convert.

Evgeny Kuznetsov scored his 21st goal of the season 4:12 into overtime to seal the Capitals win in overtime 3-2.

SHAVINGS

-Alex Ovechkin had 8 shots on goal in this game
-Jay Beagle was dominant in the faceoff dot, as he won 76% of his draws
-The Capitals outhit the Jets 28-25 in this game
-Philipp Grubauer made 26 saves in this game
-The Capitals did not surrender any shots to the Jets in overtime
