The Washington Capitals and assistant coaches Kevin McCarthy and Blaine Forsythe have agreed to part ways, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today.
“We want to sincerely thank Kevin and Blaine for their efforts and contributions to the Capitals during their respective tenures and wish them all the best moving forward,” said MacLellan. “Blaine has been a dedicated member of our organization for 17 seasons and was instrumental in helping the franchise capture its first Stanley Cup in 2018.”
Forsythe joined the Capitals as a video coach prior to the 2006-07 season and served in that role for two years before being promoted to amateur scout in 2008-09. Forsythe returned to the Capitals’ coaching staff in 2009-10 as an assistant coach, a position he held for 14 seasons.
McCarthy spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the Capitals after being hired on Oct. 21, 2020. McCarthy has coached professionally for 33 seasons, including stints in Carolina, Philadelphia and Nashville, all of which followed an 11-year playing career.
Assistant coach Scott Allen, goaltending coach Scott Murray, assistant coach/video Brett Leonhardt and video coordinator Emily Engel-Natzke will return to the team’s coaching staff next season.

Nice. New coach should have his guys and nice to keep Allen for either the new staff or maybe back to Hershey.
Allen is not going back to Hershey. If he’s not promoted this off-season, he’ll be poached by Anaheim or Phoenix or some other shit team.

This makes me feel that the Caps organization is more serious about change.
Does anyone have any thoughts about Scott Murray? I never hear any discussion of him. Caps have a good history with developing goalies, but we just traded away two who failed under Scott and are now starting for other teams in the playoffs. Both had very good years and are ranking high in statistics. Why could we not develop them here?
Our posts crossed. I would have liked to see him go. But then seeing Sammy and Vanecek doing well elsewhere and Darcy looking pedestrian and Charlie struggling, I now put more on the system then on the Murray. And we have a lot of depth to be coached up.
We know both had potential. I felt that Sammy was immature and Vitek just couldn’t seem to get it together. Now, Sammy has been quoted praising the new training he got in Toronto and crediting it for his progress. Have not read any comments from Vee.
I could see both leaving and being successful. But they have both been beyond just successful. They are now Aplus students. OK, neither one mentioned for the Vezina so maybe just A’s. But still.
Why? Was it just them, or was it Caps coaching?

Fair question with sample size of 4: Sammy and Vivek thriving on good teams and systems. Darcy and Charlie coming in. All (except maybe Charlie), excelled elsewhere compared to WSH.
Murray has helped path several goalies in Caps system over the years. Two new goalies come in and don’t do great. I don’t think Murray is the best, but I would put more weight on the system in last three years.
So I give him a little leash. Wholesale coaching change is hard. Leaving a little familiarity with Allen and Murray isn’t bad. To me, Caps picked the right two to stay.
Did Scott come in when Trotz left? We had the Goalie Whisperer before that, right?
I believe he was an assistant with AZ and then came to the Bears in like 2019 as assistant. Promoted to head coach. Then this is his first year with the Caps.

I cheated and looked this up to make sure I wasn’t off. You are correct in that Trotz brought in Korn in 2014. What i can’t tell is if Murray came to Hershey a year earlier in 2013. But regardless he was there for all of Trotz and Korn and then some.

Darcy didn’t look pedestrian. He was 19-3-2 with 3 goals of support. The Caps didn’t help him out.
Another mutually agreed to part ways. I think this is just professional standard of telling people they need to go without firing them. Smart moves and again shows the good culture of Ted, Dick, and GMBM. Glad Allen is staying. Wouldn’t have been sad to see Scott Murray go though, but i guess we have a lot of developing goalies in the system. And maybe it is not all his fault.
How about cleaning out the medical staff. This team has lost to many players to injuries!
Wilson, Brown, Backstrom, Carlson, Hagelin all had serious, traumatic injuries. Medical staff had nothing to do with it.
Btw pretty much no athlete rehabs from surgery with the team until they’re back to doing sport specific work.

Time for them all to go and several should have left with Reardon. Ted spends unwisely on players however does not invest in QUALITY coaching. I would also look at either acquiring some more scouts (maybe a great place to shift Oshie and Backy to and let them keep their salaries and they would not count against the cap) to scout more than Russia and parts of Canada.
