That Didn’t Take Long: Mike Sgarbossa Scores First Goal As a Washington Capital In First Game Since Being Recalled

With the announcement that right wing T.J. Oshie had been placed on Injured Reserve, the Washington Capitals recalled forwards Beck Malenstyn and Michael Sgarbossa from the American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears. In his first game since being summoned, Sgarbossa wasted no time in getting on the scoresheet.

Late in the first period of the team’s Thanksgiving Eve game against the Montreal Canadiens, Sgarbossa was credited with his third career NHL goal and first as a member of the Capitals when the puck bounced, first off Sgarbossa, and then a Habs defender, before finding its way past Montreal goaltender Jake Allen, putting the Caps ahead 3-0.

The goal was Sgarbossa’s first in a Capitals uniform and his third career NHL goal, with his previous two coming as a member of the Florida Panthers. In seven games played with the Capitals over parts of two seasons heading into tonight’s contest, Sgarbossa had recorded two assists. The 29-year old is the Hershey Bears’ Goals and Points leader this season. Additionally, Sgarbossa became the 14th different goal-scorer for the Capitals in the past nine contests.
