Like many of the Washington Capitals prospects convening in Northern Virginia this week, goaltender Garin Bjorklund will be participating in his first formal camp with the team. Due to COVID, the Capitals will be holding their first development camp in more than two years, beginning this Saturday at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. Then the Capitals main training camp gets underway on Wednesday.
Bjorklund, a 6’-2”, 180lb goaltender from Grande Priaire, Alberta, was drafted by the Capitals in the sixth round (#179 overall) of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. He will join the team on Tuesday for the Capitals main training camp.
“Hopefully I go there and show off what I’ve got, meet everyone and hopefully I play really well and my goal is to get a contract there,” he told Medicine Hat News.
Garin Bjorklund: 2021 Annual Review And Forecast
Bjorklund, 19, is looking forward to sharing the ice with Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, someone he’s idolized since a young age.
“It’ll be pretty cool to see Ovi’s shot, as a little kid you kind of look up to that guy and now for me to be in the cage and see what his shot is like in person, it’ll be eye-opening for sure,” Bjorklund said.
Bjorklund has been busy during this offseason, taking part in Canada’s world junior camp, at the end of July and Beginning of August.
“Everyone there is obviously a high-end hockey player and they are there for a reason,” he said. “So just to be at that camp and play on that team come Christmas time it’s a huge honor anytime you get to wear the maple leaf.”
Bjorklund will likely return for one more season with the Medicine Hat Tigers in the WHL, before being considered for a move up to Hershey for the 2022-23 season.
