Washington Capitals forward T.J. Oshie announced via Twitter on Tuesday morning that his 56-year-old father, Tim Oshie, has passed away. The 34-year-old forward missed the team’s 5-3 win over the New York Rangers on Monday due to a family manner.

It’s with a heavy heart today that my family mourns the passing of my Dad “Coach Oshie.” Coach lived life to the fullest and was unanimously loved by everyone who met him. Tim was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2012.

After the Capitals won the Stanley Cup in 2018, Oshie spoke about how emotional it was for him to share the moment with his dad on the ice. The two cried with joy when they finally met on the ice after Game 5 against the Vegas Golden Knights concluded.

When Tim was unable to attend the team’s annual dad’s and mentor’s trip last season, the other fathers on it FaceTimed him from Nationwide Arena in Columbus.

It is unknown how long Oshie will be out of the Capitals’ lineup. The team faces the Rangers again on Wednesday.

Laviolette said that he has exchanged several texts with T.J.. In one of the texts from this morning, T.J. said “he really enjoyed watching that game last night.”
