The NHL Department of Player Safety has suspended Capitals forward Garnet Hathaway three games for his involvement in the incident that occurred at the end of the second period of the Capitals-Ducks game on Monday night.
The NHL released their decision via their twitter account Wednesday afternoon:

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Hathaway will forfeit $24,193.53. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
The incident occurred at 19:26 of the second period. Hathaway was assessed a match penalty.
Damn hate to see this happen but you dont spit on other players. Frankly this never would have happened if the refs had taken control of the game in the 1st period when Carlson was hit with a high stick and cut and several other penalties by Ducks players especially Guhle that were not called. Isnt it time to put a ref in the rafters and let him call things that the on ice refs miss. Also I am allfor going to something similar to basketball in hockey where you only get so many penalties called against you and then you are out of the game. Lets start with all this trash talking and make it a minor for the first time and then a major the 2nd and a game misconduct for the 3rd time. This will stop a lot of the hitting and punching. Also one more how about making it a penalty for anyone other than the goalie to be in the crease. It would be a 4 minute minor the first time and the 2nd time a 5 minute major. Yes it would cut down on the scoring but it would also stop a lot of the fighting and retaliatory behavior. I truly blame the refs for a lot of the bad penalties that are called because they are usually a result of non called infractions.

This is a war game for a reason. Emotions can fly out of hand if you don’t take enough caution and thinking to the things you say. Emotional wars happen often in this game. I would advise a caution to those individuals with high emotions.
