Braden Holtby told Washington media today that he had sustained an injury during the playoffs.

Braden Holtby told reporters on Wednesday that he had sustained a knee injury during the first round of the playoffs against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Although Holtby would not detail how or when the injury occurred, a cursory review of the playoff series does highlight a potential injury that may have occurred during a practice on April 19th, between games 3 and 4 of the series. Holtby had collided with a teammate during practice, and left the ice early.

ESPN detailed the incident: During a drill, an unidentified teammate tried to avoid contact with Holtby but the two got tangled up and the goalie’s stick went flying. Holtby gingerly skated to the corner and was favoring his left leg. He retrieved his stick and returned to his position in the crease.

Capitals Head Coach Trotz was quoted in a post-practice interview with the Washington Post, stating “Basically, just got nicked up a little bit and went off,” Trotz said. “We’ll see where he is tomorrow.” Caps Nation was holding their breath until CSN posted this video later that day:

Regardless, Holtby sounds like he is fully healed and ready to go for the World Cup of Hockey and, more importantly, the NHL season.
