The Washington Capitals traveled up to Long Island ahead of a Metro Division matchup against the New York Islanders. However, they weren’t the only ones traveling. Captain, the team dog and service dog in training made the trip up north earlier today, which featured a stop at America’s VetDogs‘ headquarters in Smithtown, New York.
Captain’s outing began early this morning.
Captain & his buddies are are on a very special road trip 😁

The first order of business was the weigh-in. Captain has grown up a lot since joining the Capitals over three months ago. He weighs 65 pounds now!

After a break (working off that kibble), Captain met veterans and their pups prior to graduation on Saturday. You can read more about graduate stories by clicking here.
got to meet these frens before the vets & their pups graduate tomorrow !! one day i will graduate too ❤️ pic.twitter.com/p6HPsoVrPO

The Islanders also have a pup through America’s VetDogs. Tori, a little reddish/yellow female Labrador Retriever is apart of “Puppies with a Purpose” as a service dog. Maybe we’ll get a chance to see Captain and Tori together on Saturday?
Being a part of America’s VetDogs’ program, an important quality of Captain is his 16-month training to become a service dog for a veteran or first responder with disabilities. Once Captain’s basic training is finished with the team, he will go back to the non-profit organization in Smithtown for a few months of final preparations before becoming an official service dog.
As always, please check out and follow America’s VetDogs on social media:
