Capitals Return Henrik Borgstrom to Hershey


The Washington Capitals announced Thursday afternoon that they have re-assigned forward Henrik Borgstrom to AHL Hershey. Borgstrom was recalled by the Capitals on Tuesday and played Tuesday night against the Bruins in Boston. He recorded no points and an xGF% of 11.92% in 8:10 of total time on ice.

The Bears have two more games remaining in their regular season schedule – Friday against the Islanders in Bridgeport and Saturday at home against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. The Bears have earned a bye in the first round of the postseason and will be idle next week.

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have loaned forward Henrik Borgstrom to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today.

Borgstrom, 25, made his Capitals debut on April 11 against the Boston Bruins. The 6’3″, 207-pound forward has recorded 21 points (8g, 13a) in 54 games with Hershey this season. Borgstrom ranks tied for fifth on the Bears in power-play goals (3) and power-play assists (5).

Borgstrom recorded seven points (4g, 3a) in 52 games with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2021-22, setting single-season career highs in games played and penalty minutes (22). Borgstrom spent the 2020-21 season with HIFK of Liiga in Finland, recording 21 points (11g, 10a) in 30 games. The Helsinki, Finland native added five points (2g, 3a) in eight playoff games.

Borgstrom was selected by the Florida Panthers in the first round, 23rd overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft. Borgstrom recorded a career-high 18 points (8g, 10a) in 50 games with Florida during the 2018-19 season, while also registering 22 points (5g, 17a) in 24 games with the Springfield Thunderbirds of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Borgstrom has recorded 26 points (13g, 13a) in 111 career NHL games with the Capitals, Florida and Chicago. In 127 AHL games with Hershey and Springfield, Borgstrom has recorded 66 points (24g, 42a).

Borgstrom attended the University of Denver, where he recorded 95 points (45g, 50a) in 77 games over two seasons. During the 2017-18 season, Borgstrom led the NCHC in scoring and helped Denver capture the NCAA Championship. Borgstrom was named NCHC Forward of the Year, NCHC Player of the Year, was selected to the NCHC First All-Star Team and the NCAA (West) First All-American Team and was a Hobey Baker Award finalist.

    Figures. Break your streak of 15 Finn-less years for one whole game. Lemme review WHL players, so I can tell you who we’ll draft in June. Probably Zach Benson or Brayden Yager, unless we win the lottery, and get Bedard.
