Tempers With Tampa Bay: Line Brawl Breaks Out Between Capitals, Lightning Late in Third Period of 5-1 Caps Victory

After tempers began to flare following a hit by Washington Capitals forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel on Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Cal Foote in the second period of their 5-1 victory on Friday night, the two clubs’ frustrations with one another boiled over late in the third period.

With just under six minutes left in the game, a cross-check by Tampa Bay’s Ross Colton on Capitals defenseman and alternate captain John Carlson sent the two teams (and former Southeast Division rivals) into a line brawl.

The tensions between the two teams followed not only the match penalty to Aube-Kubel, but a fight between Garnet Hathaway and Patrick Maroon (pictured).

The Capitals and Lightning finished the night with a combined 79 Penalty Minutes (PIM), and will meet again on Sunday at Amalie Arena, where there will be some hard feelings left between the two teams.

Anthony Mantha, who scored the Capitals’ first goal, finished the night with a Gordie Howe hat trick (Goal, Assist, and Fight).

Definitely. And we’ll be down another physical forward. I’m not liking the Caps situation.

Coop’s answer to that question was that we’ll have to see who manages to make it to the ice. NAK may be suspended and several Tampa players are banged up. Tampa played the last few minutes with 3 D-men.

Brian Engblom, Tampa’s answer to Locker, loved the feisty game — real old school were his words. Brian, btw, called Ovi’s first game. He revealed that while he thought Ovi was a big kid, he really didn’t expect much out of him. And wryly admitted just how wrong he was.

Think it will be 3 games and a fine. Shame that the ref stepped in the middle of the Hathaway Maroon fight as Hathaway had Maroon on his knees and was about ready to unload a nice punch to his face. Going to be one big fight Sunday night! Better get on the horn and get Hunter and several others back for this one!!
