Darcy Kuemper’s New Retro Mask Pays Tribute To Olie Kolzig

On Saturday the Washington Capitals released images of goaltender Darcy Kuemper’s new mask that pay’s tribute to former Capitals goaltender Olie “Godzilla” Kolzig. The mask will be donned by Kuemper tonight for the first time when the Capitals debut their new Reverse Retro uniforms.

Kolzig took to his Twitter account Saturday evening to send his approval, and noted he appreciated the tribute by Kuemper.

Kolzig played u11 games over 16 seasons with the Capitals and won the Vezina Trophy in 2000.

The new mask features a fire-breathing Godzilla and reptile scales, in tribute to Kolzig’s nickname. The mask also features a screaming Eagle and Kuemper;s #35 on the chin.
