The breakthrough made him a great audience favorite.

Now, Axel Jonsson-Fjällby, 20, will try to take make the Washington Capitals – but is also open to the possibility of playing in Djurgården (Swedish Hockey League).

“I have to know if I’m ready for North America or need a season in Sweden,” said Jonsson-Fjallby.

Axel Jonsson-Fjällby charmed the crowd at Hovet last season.

He scored six goals in eleven final games.

And after the success of JVM, he also became popular throughout the country.

“Clearly, I noticed that I got a lot of attention, maybe because I have a special game style. I also like those players who work hard and still can create and produce. It is funny to note that”, the 20-year-old says about the breakthrough.

After the season, the “Hunter”, as he is called, was also awarded with an NHL contract with the Stanley Cup champions Washington Capitals and on September 4th he returns to the US capital to fight for a place on the team.

Djurgården

But Djurgården fans should not give up hope of seeing the 20-year-old at Hovet this winter.

At least not yet.

If Jonsson-Fjällby does not take part in the NHL team, one has the right to choose where to play.

“There are some mixed feelings because I do not know what’s happening”, he concludes.

“If I go home, the possibilities are great for Djurgården. I’ll feel a bit like it’s over there first. I have never played in North America and need some time being the first year. But I have to know if I’m ready or need a year in Sweden.

“Little rink suits me”

Since you do not have an existing contract with Djurgården – may there be another SHL club?

– No I do not think so. If I come back, it’s only Djurgården.

Your game style should still work in North America?

– Yes, I think that the smaller rink suits me. I like it and was already on my way two to three years ago to play college hockey. But I stopped and did not regret it for a second.

How much did you see Washington’s playoffs?

– Not so much, actually. Mostly highlights. I do not like being up at night. In addition, I had a long season with Djurgården and then a national team game afterwards.

Is there anything more hideous and unsightly than a European hockey uniform? I doubt it.

  2. Dylan Shirk says:

Lets be honest, he just doesnt want to adjust to North America in Hershey. This is why you dont draft these Europeans, they think they are ready made for the NHL.
