Lightning Strike Back, Beat Capitals 4-2; Caps Lead Series 2-1

The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Washington Capitals 4-2 Tuesday night at Capital one arena. With the loss, the Capitals now lead the series 2-1, with Game 4 set for Thursday night at Capital One Arena. 

The Lightning opened the scoring with a power play goal from Steve Stamkos to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. The Lightning would stretch their lead to 2-0 with a power play goal from Nikita Kucherov and an even-strength goal from Victor Hedman to take a 3-0 lead before Brett Connolly would get the Caps on the scoreboard. The Lightning would get it right back, making it 4-1 at the second intermission. Evgeny Kuznetsov would register a late tally to make it 4-2.

STARTERS
Braden Holtby (10-3, 2.04 GAA, .926 sv%) started between the pipes for the Capitals. Andrei Vasilevskiy (8-4, 2.74 GAA, .912 sv%) started in goal for the Lightning. The Capitals starting forward lines and defensive pairs for Game 3:

FIRST PERIOD
The Lightning would open the scoring with a power play goal from Steven Stamkos at 13:53 of the opening frame. The man-advantage was setup by a tripping call on Braden Holtby.

The first stanza would conclude with the Lightning leading 1-0. Washington outshot Tampa 14-10 for the first 20 minutes. Tampa won the faceoff battle 65-35%. Tom Wilson had the hit of the opening frame.

SECOND PERIOD
The Lightning would stretch their lead to 2-0 with another power play goal. This time Nikita Kucherov would register the tally at 1:50 of the middle frame.

The Lightning would make it 3-0 shortly thereafter with a goal from Victor Hedman at 3:37 of the middle frame, making it 3-0.

The Capitals would finally get on the scoreboard with a goal from Brett Connolly at 10:31 of the middle frame. Chandler Stephenson and Matt Niskanen were credited with the helpers.

The Lightning would restore the three-goal lead with a goal from Brayden Point at 16:03 of the second period, making it 4-1.

The second period would end with the Lightning leading 4-1. Washington outshot Tampa 11-8 for the second period, and 25-19 after 40 minutes of play.

THIRD PERIOD
The Capitals and Lightning battled for most of the final frame without a tally before Evgeny Kuznetsov lit the lamp at 16:58, making it 4-2. T.J. Oshie and Lars Eller were credited with the assists.

That would be the final.
