Brooks Orpik’s earth-shattering hit on Olli Maatta set an early tone for game 2. Just four minutes into the game, Orpik caught Maatta in a vulnerable position in the Caps defensive zone.
The hit, just 4:13 into the game, sent Maatta to the dressing room. Maatta did not return for the remainder of the first period, and did not return to the game.
The first video shows what appears to be an elbow to Maatta’s head area, but it’s difficult to be sure. Orpik received a 2-minute minor for the hit.
At the intermission, NBC’s Mike Milbury called Orpik a “predator”, and mandated a suspension for Orpik. “That guy needs to go”, stated Milbury. Milbury mandated a two game suspension, at minimum.
During the second intermission, the NHL’s Department of Public Safety announced they would review Brooks Orpik’s Hit on Maatta.
