At long last, the NHL, NHLPA and the IIHF have officially announced a best-on-best tournament that will begin during the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy and the 2030 Winter Olympics.

This is the first time that the NHL will participate in the Olympics since 2014 in Sochi, Russia. They were scheduled to return in 2022, however the league opted out due to COVID-19 outbreaks among NHL clubs. Games in 2026 will be played on NHL-sized ice. Meanwhile, it is unclear whether or not Team Russia will make its return.

Meanwhile, the NHL announced that the 2025 All-Star game will be replaced with the Four Nations Tournament, which consists of the United States, Canada, Finland and Sweden. The tournament will take place in Montreal and Boston.

The 2026 Winter Olympics are scheduled for Feb. 6-22 in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Nothing against Milano, but I’m not sure that the Olympics are any sort of sure bet.

If Team Canada has any kind of brains, they’ll put Tom Wilson on it. Without him, they look a little soft.
