The Washington Capitals announced Monday morning that they have signed Brett Leason to a two-year, one-way extension at $750,000 AAV.
Leason, 23, recorded six points (3g, 3a) in 36 games with the Capitals during the 2021-22 season. He made his NHL debut on Oct. 29, 2021 against the Arizona Coyotes and recorded his first NHL goal on November 1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Leason finished the season ranked third among Capitals rookies in games played. In addition, Leason recorded 13 points (6g, 7a) in 31 games with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL).

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have re-signed forward Brett Leason to a two-year, $1.55 million contract, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today. Leason’s one-way contract will pay him $750,000 in 2022-23 and $800,000 in 2023-24.
Leason, 23, recorded six points (3g, 3a) in 36 games with the Capitals during the 2021-22 season. Leason made his NHL debut on Oct. 29, 2021 against the Arizona Coyotes and finished the season ranked third among Capitals rookies in games played. The 6’5″, 218-pound forward also made his Stanley Cup Playoffs debut on May 5 in Game 2 of the First Round at Florida.
In addition, Leason recorded 13 points (6g, 7a) in 31 games with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL). Leason appeared in two of Hershey’s playoff games, recording one goal. In 114 career AHL career games with Hershey, Leason has recorded 47 points (18g, 29a).
The Capitals selected Leason with their second-round pick, 56th overall, in the 2019 NHL Draft.

Wow… one way agreement, so this would signal that Caps have plans for him. Probably also had to do a one-way to get him to resign. But i am good and excited about this. I think Leason will even gets some looks at 1RW with Wilson out (and we don’t have to play Oshie at 1RW in regular season).
Yeah, that caught my eye as well.
I like it. I see Leason as an all-arounder. He competes defensively. He will contribute offensively. He’s physically tough for teams to play against and he’ll only get stronger. He doesn’t appear to be a fighter which I can live with if he doesn’t shrink from physical hockey. It often takes time for big guys to learn to score in the NHL. Can he become a 20 or 30 goal scorer one day? I think he can. And if he plays strong D all over the ice he’ll help the team.

Agree Lance. He has always been an offensively gifted power forward. But he has also evolved his game to be responsible which is why the coaches trust him up and down the lineup. Hence I think he’ll get some top line duty. Speed is not really his thing, but he is smart and has a physical element to him. I really hope he shines this year with his second year opportunity in NHL.
The dominos are starting to topple. Kinda meh on him but he can be moved around the lineup and maybe we can see his game take off in October. Congrats!

Great time to start and get toknow what you have before wasting or spending a lot of money of UFAs. The talent in Hershey NOW can keep this team where it is…..a playoff team that goes out in the first round. IT will take until after Ovie leaves before they realize that paying all these old players and not trading any was detramental to the team in keeping it in the playoffs and advancing.Lessons should be learned and a new younger GM brought inand not one mentored by GMGM, preferable from outside the organization and younger and with some new ideas and also a new coach.
I figure both Leason and Protas will both get time as 1RW. Protas has shown he could function in a Kozlov/Knuble type role from the past. Leason maybe could too. Leason was envisioned as being a Wilson type player. Perhaps, he could also fill the Wilson role temporarily.
