Like A Fine Wine: Alex Ovechkin Becomes Oldest Player In Capitals’ Franchise History To Score A Hat Trick

Alex Ovechkin recorded his 28th career hat trick Friday night against the Panthers. The trifecta marked Ovechkin’s 28th career hat trick, which ties him with Marcel Dionne and Bobby Hull for the sixth-most in NHL history.

Ovechkin (36 years, 70 days) is now the oldest player to score a hat trick in Capitals franchise history. Peter Bondra (35 years, 295 days on Nov. 29, 2003) previously held the record.

In addition, Ovechkin recorded his 153rd career multi-goal game against Florida Friday night, leaving him two multi-goal games shy of passing Mario Lemieux (154) for the third-most in NHL history. Additionally, Ovechkin has tied Jari Kurri (385) for the 21st-most multi-point games in NHL history.

Ovechkin has recorded 36 points (18g, 18a) in 21 games so far this season. Ovechkin’s 1.71 points per game rate is a single-season career high and he is currently on pace for 140 points over an 82-game season.

Ovechkin now ranks seconds in the NHL in goals (18) and tied for second in points (36).

Ovechkin is additionally now just two power play goals shy from passing Dave Andreychuk (274) for the most power play goals in NHL history.

The Capitals improve to 13-3-5 (31 points) on the season. Washington’s 31 points are tied with the Carolina Hurricanes and the Florida Panthers for the most in the NHL.

The Capitals are back on the ice on Sunday when they visit the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh. Puck drop is set for 1:00 PM ET.
