During the second period of Friday night’s Capitals game against the New York Islanders, the Washington Capitals and their fans witnessed a scare that involved one of their key centers. Evgeny Kuznetsov was going down the ice for a breakaway.

As he approached the goal he was slashed in his right wrist by the stick of Thomas Hickey. As that happened, Kuznetsov lost control and crashed right into the boards. This came with six seconds left in the second period. Trainers came out to the ice to aid Kuznetsov. While he did get up, he was still in pain and headed to the dressing room.

Capitals PR sent out a tweet saying that Kuznsetsov wouldn’t return to the game and will be evaluated on Saturday as the team travels to Philadelphia for their big contest against the Flyers Sunday evening.

After the game, which saw the Caps win 6-3, Barry Trotz was asked the status of Kuznetsov. According to The Washington Post’s Isabelle Khurshudyan, Trotz didn’t have any updates and that they’ll have more clarity tomorrow.

UPDATE:
At about 2:22 p.m. on Saturday March 17, the Capitals announced that Kuznetsov is listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury. He will not play in Sunday’s game against the Flyers.
