The Capitals Recall Travis Boyd From Hershey

The Washington Capitals have recalled forward Travis Boyd from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today. 

Boyd was in attendance at this morning’s optional skate at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.

Boyd, 24, recorded 44 points (15g, 29a) in 56 games with Hershey this season, which ranks second on the Bears and is tied for 12th in the AHL. Additionally, the Hopkins, Minn. native’s 24 power play points (7g, 17a) leads the Bears, while his 17 power play assists are tied for second in the AHL. Boyd has recorded 14 multi-point games this season.

Boyd made his NHL debut against the San Jose Sharks on Dec. 4 and has played in two games for the Capitals this season.

Boyd registered 63 points (16g, 47a) in 76 games with the Bears during the 2016-17 season, setting career highs in points, assists and plus/minus (+19). The 5’11”, 185-pound forward led Hershey in points and assists last season and was named team MVP. In addition, he finished the season ranked tied for third in the AHL in assists and tied for sixth in points. Boyd was named to the AHL’s Second All-Star Team for the 2016-17 season and represented the Atlantic Division at the 2017 AHL All-Star Classic. Boyd has registered 162 points (53g, 109a) in 210 career AHL games with Hershey.

Drafted with the Capitals’ sixth-round pick in the 2011 draft, Boyd played in four seasons for the University of Minnesota and recorded 96 points (32g, 64a) in 148 collegiate games. Boyd won the Big Ten championship in the 2014-15 season and was named to the Big Ten’s Second All-Star Team. Additionally, Boyd won a gold medal for Team USA in the U-18 World Junior Championship in 2011.

    My reaction to the news that Travis Boyd is back with the parent club is, “WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?????????”

    Barry Trotz isn’t going to play him enough to develop his talent any more than he currently does Chandler Stephenson (who I like a lot better as a scorer than I do Boyd) or Jakub Vrana (who I like better than both of them…)

    Again, considering the fact that coach Trotz’ PT decisions with youngsters (who the Caps absolutely NEED to play and DEVELOP if they’re ever going to have a prayer of getting past the second round) is piss poor–so I’m not too enthused about Boyd being back with the team because he isn’t going to play…not now, and DEFINITELY NOT during the pressure cooker of the playoffs…
