Former Washington Capital Joel Ward is going to the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in his career as the San Jose Sharks defeated the St. Louis Blues 5-2.

Ward was in Washington from 2011 through 2015 and he will always be remembered in DC for his clutch goals in the playoffs.  Ward signed with the Sharks last summer as an unrestricted free agent.

The first of these heroics came in 2012 when the seventh seeded Capitals upset the number two seed and defending Stanley Cup champions at the time, the Bruins in their barn in Boston.

Three years later he came up big once again on the road.  This time in New York at The Garden when the Caps faced the Rangers in Game 1 of the second round.  It was a rare buzzer beater.

Both goals would silence the crowd, but on Wednesday night with his new team playing at home, Ward scored twice and helped rock the house on the way to the Sharks’ first trip to the Stanley Cup finals.

Congratulations to “The Big Cheese” and the San Jose Sharks and good luck in the finals. Joel Ward, DC still misses you.

Joe Ward is playing like he should of played with the caps. I’m happy for him but would of liked to see that last year against the Rangers. Hope he will get to hold the cup above his head
