Hockey is one of the coolest sports in the world and also one of the most interesting. As many of us follow the sport throughout the year, we’ll see some odd things happening both on the ice and off the ice and for our boys in red, there’s been a share of funny moments over the last decade. Here’s a top 10 list of moments that you don’t see every day from both on and off the ice.
10. Semin and Staal fighting?
During a game in 2009 vs. the Rangers, Alexander Semin and Marc Staal got in a fight, but was it really a fight? First they wrapped their arms around each other and Staal took Semins jersey off, then they fell down and while Staal was on the ground Semin slapped him like he was beating a drum. They both got majors for fighting while Semin also received a major for misconduct.
If you’re fighting someone without throwing a punch, it is a misconduct indeed. It led to Alex Ovechkin making fun of it later in the year while playing hockey on the Nintendo Wii.
9. Orlov Houdini goal
Now you see it, now you don’t. Dmitry Orlov used some sleight of hand and a little bit of misdirection with the puck to fool Avalanche netminder Calvin Pickard, the refs, and the players and fans.
8. Jay Beagle gets Kris Letang’s stick stuck in his helmet during Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals
Talk about high sticking.
7. Jason Chimera goal from center ice
This was from Game 2 of the 2016 Stanley Cup quarterfinals. Look at that puck bounce! Bad break for Flyers netminder Steve Mason as he lost track of the puck when Jason Chimera dumped the puck in the Flyers’ zone.
6. When you gotta go, you gotta go….
Stuck in the washroom…someone help? #Dallasproblems #OmniHotel #Validexcuse pic.twitter.com/1g7nlNy73C
— Joel Ward (@JRandalWard42) October 5, 2013
Fan favorite, Joel Ward got stuck in a hotel bathroom when the team was in Dallas back in October 2013. He got stuck at 9:27 a.m. and called his teammate Karl Alzner to save him. It took place over at the Omni hotel. Alzner came to his aid and brought along John Carlson. Hotel employees also came with a ladder.

After Ward tweeted the pic, Troy Brouwer and Alex Ovechkin had a little fun trolling.

5. Even the dogs hate when the Caps lose
When the Caps lost to the Rangers during Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2012, they fell in triple overtime. When Karl Alzner went home after a long night of work, which is much worse when you’re on the losing side of the long games, even his dogs weren’t happy with the outcome. Both of them escaped from their cages and trashed his place.
4. Serious golf game
Moment number… FOUR! Kuzy is a natural with the puck and as we discovered in early October, a natural on the golf course!
I guess I’m natural…so fun to play pic.twitter.com/o0dHPQCDaX

3. Tom Wilson discovers… pickles
When EPIX took us behind the scenes two years ago in their “Road to the Winter Classic” documentary. One of the highlights of the show was the bromance of the “Caps Roomies”: Tom Wilson and Michael Latta. When they went out in Columbus, Wilson discovered the power of the pickle.
“A pickle is like a pickled cucumber, no?”, Wilson said. Latta didn’t believe him and wanted to be convinced of how to turn a cucumber into a pickle. Gotta love all the random conversations when you’re on the road with your bros.
2. Oh Flyers fans
The Caps had a challenging weekend in late February 2015. After an afternoon matinee at Verizon Center with the Islanders, the team traveled two to three hours to Philly for a Sunday game in the City of Brotherly Love. They got a wake up call in the morning with Alex Ovechkin and Marcus Johansson capturing the moment. Barry Trotz jokingly blamed the Flyers fans.
1. Look at em go! – The Near Death of a Franchise
Alex Ovechkin and Mike Green back in the young guys era driving a golf cart around is like me running through the hallways of my high school after school. They almost got crushed by the garage door, going just under it to avoid being injured.
Did we leave any of your favorites out? Lets us know!
