The Washington Capitals took on the New York Islanders for the front-end of their second straight back-to-back tilt. The Caps were seven minutes away from taking another 2-1 decision, but blew the lead and the game went to overtime for the second straight night, but Dylan Strome ended matters on the power play with a wrist shot from the point giving the Capitals the extra point.

The big story from Wednesday was the debut of 2022 first round pick Ivan Miroshnichenko. He looked very solid and had a great scoring chance in the second period.

Here is how it went down.

PERIOD 1

Both teams had a power play to start the game but could not convert. Hendrix Lapierre made it 1-0 Capitals off a defensive zone turnover with 10:04 left in the first period. Aliaksei Protas had the only assist. It was the first time the Capitals had scored the first goal in four games.

The Capitals heavily outshot the Islanders 14-7 in the first period.

PERIOD 2

The Caps got off to a slow start in the second period. Hudson Fasching went five-hole on Kuemper on a wrap-around, 1:02 into the middle frame. The goal was unassisted.

Joel Edmundson gave the Capitals a 2-1 lead off a laser beam from the point, beating Semyon Varlamov to the far post, at the 6:48 mark of the period. Anthony Mantha and Lapierre had the helpers. It was Edmundson’s first goal as a Capital.

Washington outshot New York 12-9 in the second stanza.

PERIOD 3

Anders Lee tied the game at two with 7:58 in regulation. Four Capitals players were in the corner and Lee came away with a loose puck to go forehand backhand on Kuemper. The goal was unassisted.

For the second straight game, the game required overtime. The Islanders outshot the Caps 16-8 in the third period.

Overtime

The Caps got a power play 43 seconds into overtime. Dylan Strome ended things in the extra session.
