On day two of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, the Capitals selected forward Andrew Cristall in the second round (40th overall), center Patrick Thomas in the fourth round (104th overall) and defenseman Cameron Allen in the fifth round (136th overall). They next selected forward Brett Hyland in the seventh round, 200th overall.
Hyland, 20, posted 26 goals and 21 assists in just 42 games last season for the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League (WHL). The 5’11”, 188-pound forward ranked first on Brandon in plus/minus rating (+11), tied for second in power play goals (11), third in goals and fourth in points. Hyland is a third-year draft eligible native of Edmonton.
Note: The Capitals acquired the 206th overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. They used the puck to select goaltender Antoine Keller, a French native who played in the Swiss U20 league this past season.

Good player and pick but what is drafting all these guys 5’10 and 5’11? Are we going back to the days of Hunter and Oates?
I feel like the caps tend to go smaller in the later rounds anyway. But Cristall’s size in the second was definitely a break from the tall trend in the early rounds
