“It’s been an issue that’s lingered, that he’s played with and has gotten worse as the time has gone on and it’s at a bad point right now,” Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said Sept. 22.
The type of surgery is classified as the same type of surgery that Capitals center and fellow countryman Nicklas Backstrom had on his left hip last summer.
Hagelin is also recovering from an eye injury he suffered at the end of a practice on March 1, 2022, when he was caught with an inadvertent stick. The Capitals announced on March 6 that he underwent successful surgery to his left eye.
In 713 career games with the Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, and New York Rangers, the Sodertalje, Sweden native has 110 goals and 186 assists.

A two time Stanley Cup winner with the Penguins in 2016 and 2017, Hagelin was selected 168th overall by the Rangers in the 2007 NHL Draft.

I think Hagelin never playing again has been a foregone conclusion. I wonder if it’s better to get all maintenance surgeries before a player retires?
His contract expires after this season, so we’re done with him. Best of luck with your new career, Carl, whatever it is.
