The Stanley Cup has finally found its home in Washington. One of the big decisions remaining for the team is whose names will actually be engraved on a ring of the Cup.  There are just a few rules regarding who automatically qualifies, with a maximum of 24 names making the final list. That means that unfortunately, some of the names that were on the roster for Game 5 of the Finals will not be included on the Cup.

The Basic Rules per NHL:
Currently, to qualify for automatic engraving, a player:

  1. Must have played, or have dressed as the backup goaltender, for at least half of the championship team’s regular season games. OR:
  2. Must have played, or have dressed as the backup goaltender, for at least one game of the Stanley Cup Finals for the championship team, AND:
  3. Must be on the roster when the team wins the Stanley Cup.

The following names automatically qualify for being included on the Cup (leaving two spots open for the team to decide). Automatic engravings:

Alex Ovechkin
T.J. Oshie
Dmitry Orlov
Brooks Orpik
Braden Holtby
Evgeny Kuznetsov
Tom Wilson
Jon Carlson
Devante Smith-Pelly
Jakub Vrana
Nicklas Backstrom
Andre Burakovski
Michal Kempny
Lars Eller
Matt Niskanen
Brett Connolly

Some of the notable names that don’t automatically qualify include: Shane Gersich, Travis Boyd, Jakub Jerabek, Pheonix Copley, and Nathan Walker. Who would you add?:
