The Stanley Cup has finally found its home in Washington. One of the big decisions remaining for the team is whose names will actually be engraved on a ring of the Cup. There are just a few rules regarding who automatically qualifies, with a maximum of 24 names making the final list. That means that unfortunately, some of the names that were on the roster for Game 5 of the Finals will not be included on the Cup.
The Basic Rules per NHL:
Currently, to qualify for automatic engraving, a player:
- Must have played, or have dressed as the backup goaltender, for at least half of the championship team’s regular season games. OR:
- Must have played, or have dressed as the backup goaltender, for at least one game of the Stanley Cup Finals for the championship team, AND:
- Must be on the roster when the team wins the Stanley Cup.
The following names automatically qualify for being included on the Cup (leaving two spots open for the team to decide). Automatic engravings:
Some of the notable names that don’t automatically qualify include: Shane Gersich, Travis Boyd, Jakub Jerabek, Pheonix Copley, and Nathan Walker. Who would you add?:
Nathan Walker got an assist against Pittsburgh, you gotta put his name on it, plus the first Aussie
No doubt Walker has to be 1, contribution vs Pit, Gersich, and Boyd.. all played in playoffs. If only 2 can be added Walker&Gersich for me
Doesn’t the Owner, Coach, GM, and President of the Team make the cut too? Does that impact the 24 names? Or is that in addition?
I think up to 50 something names can be on the Cup including owner, GMAIL, coaching staff and other front office employees.
52 names can go on it.
Definitely Walker!!!! How many more can be voted onto it?

Walker! Lets get the first Aussie on the cup!
Walker and Boyd get my votes. Gersich at least played in playoffs while Bowey did not, but only two more players can be added?
Brooks Laich, Karl Alzner, and Marcus Johansson should be honorary names.
HAS to be Walker!
Absolutely Nathan Walker should have his name on the cup! 🇭🇲🏒🏆
I can understand that there must be a limit but….What a horrible decision to have to make !
