Report: Washington Capitals Trade Anthony Mantha To Vegas Golden Knights

The Washington Capitals reportedly dealt left-wing Anthony Mantha to the Vegas Golden Knights for 2024 second-round pick and a 2026 fourth-round pick on Tuesday evening. The 28-year-old can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and carries a $5.7 million cap hit, which Washington will eat half of ($2.85 million), this season.

Mantha’s 20 goals in 56 games this season are just two behind center Dylan Strome’s for the team lead and his 34 points rank fourth. He has scored in three of Washington’s last four games.

Washington’s 5-2 loss to the Arizona Coyotes on Sunday pushed them seven points back of the Tampa Bay Lightning (who they have three games in hand on) for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference and Philadelphia Flyers (three) for third place in Metropolitan Division. They collected points in six of their previous eight (4-2-2), including a five-game point-streak (4-0-1) where they defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning, New Jersey Devils, and Philadelphia (all teams they are fighting for positioning with), before Sunday’s setback.

In 174 career games with Washington after getting acquired in a blockbuster deal that sent left-wing Jakub Vrana, the 22nd overall pick in 2021, and 52nd overall pick in 2022 to the Detroit Red Wings on April 11, 2021, Mantha recorded 44 goals and 92 points. He was the first Capital ever to score in each of his first four games with the team.

In 476 career NHL games with Washington and Detroit, Mantha has 139 goals and 286 points. He also recorded six assists in 11 postseason games with the Capitals in 2021 and 2022.

Washington reportedly shopped Mantha last offseason after he recorded 11 goals and 27 points in 67 games in 2022-23, where he was often a healthy scratch under head coach Peter Laviolette, but could not find a taker.

The NHL Trade Deadline is Friday at 3 PM ET. Defenseman Joel Edmundson, left-wing Max Pacioretty, goaltender Charlie Lindgren, left-wing Nicolas Aube-Kubel, right-wing Beck Malenstyn, and defenseman Nick Jensen have all garnered interest on the trade market. Edmundson, Pacioretty, and Aube-Kubel can also become unrestricted free agents after this season.

With captain Mark Stone out for the remainder of the regular-season and is questionable for the postseason due to an upper-body injury, Vegas improves its offense, which is tied for 14th with an average of 3.18 goals-per-game and ranks 20th with a 19.5% power-play efficiency, after adding Mantha. The team is 22-22-6 since starting the season 11-0-1. They rank fourth in the Pacific Division with a 33-22-7 record and hold a six-point cushion in the Western Conference.

Mantha could make his Golden Knights debut against the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday (10 PM ET, ESPN+).

how do we not know what we are getting in return???

  2. Mark E says:

Good on BMac. Anything lower than a 2nd rounder and I will be disappointed.

  3. Dave says:

Can we reacquire him the next time he hits a contract year?

  4. Anonymous says:

Well, I guess we will get more this year than we would have last year:). Fingers crossed Nic D is not traded!

  5. GregQ says:

WTF We get back?? The anticipation is killing me LOL

    • Jon Sorensen says:

I feel ya. We are researching diligently. Stay tuned.

    • Jon Sorensen says:

      2nd and a 4th round picks

Disappointing return. Would have held him and crossed fingers for a playoff spot

        • Anonymous says:

What return did you expect for a 30 year old who only tries when his contract is coming up?

          • Anonymous says:

Not a GM so had no expectation of return. A low second in a supposedly weak draft is not much. Would rather keep him and see what happens with the playoff push. No illusions of going far but I would rather give the guys a chance than trade him for basically nothing.

Not a trades expert, either, but I wonder what message this sends about the rest of this season and what or who will replace him this year (and next, if he were to re-sign)… Given that this is unlikely to be the last of the deals (only the beginning), are we throwing this season out the window (again)?
As for Mantha personally, I feel he has really changed this year, and it was not just the contract year pushing him to excel. Thx for the effort, man… 😔

the Caps retaining 50% of his salary is the bad part

    • Anonymous says:

LOL since when are the Caps up against the cap? Not since Backstrom went on LTIR. Were you expecting them to add someone? Maybe a top notch D like Hanifin? Or Guentzel? Hey, we coulda been planning the Cup parade, if only they hadn’t retained on Mantha!

Go back to RMNB, your ignorance is less noticeable there.

  8. Anonymous says:

4th pick is for retaining salary. they got way more for Orlov last year. Bad deal

    • Anonymous says:

They weren’t gonna get more. The market is soft. Calgary only got a 2nd and a mediocre prospect for Tanev. A right shooting, hard nosed shot blocking D should be worth waaaay more.

Anyone who thinks the Caps should’ve got more isn’t paying attention. Not to even mention the fact that Mantha brought his own value down by floating for most of the past three years.

      • rotating-earth says:

isn’t Tanev quite a bit older than Mantha?

        • Anonymous says:

Four years. As long as he plays at a high level for two months, age isn’t a factor

Aren’t RHD a lot more in demand than Mantha?

          What’s your point?

          • rotating-earth says:

not a point, just thought Tanev was a lot older. What’s YOUR point?

            • Anonymous says:

My point, which I already wrote, but apparently you’re too lazy to find it, is that the market is soft. MacLellan got about what he was gonna get.

Did that sink in, or do I have to use hand puppets, and act it out?

  9. Lance says:

    Can’t do any better than a 2nd + 4th for Mantha + 50% salary retention.

    Solid trade for BMac.

  10. Anonymous says:

Very solid trade…stop whining about the salary retention, he’s already been paid 75% of his salary this year (players only paid during regular season), so 50% of that is inconsequential..funny the folks who thought he should have brought us a first are same people who bitched last three years for how terrible he was “waive him” “I’ll take a bag of pucks” now it’s “why didn’t we get a first and prospect”? A 30yo who took five years to repeat as a 20 goal scorer and only did it in a contract year.

Having said that, I loved him as a player…people play too much into big guys need to bang, he was brutally snake bit last year, and he was never given any PP time after scoring 23 PPG in Detroit in three years (at least until last couple games and, oh, how did that go?)

    • James Lewis says:

Agreed. With all the Mantha disparaging around here, you’d think we’d have to give him away. BMac got what he could. He’s still the best GM since David Poille. I think he’s going to be buying us a better team next year. Wait and see.

  11. Anonymous says:

VKG suckers lol Glad to be rid of Mantha, I’m sure GMBM has someone with more lack luster in mind to replace him with.

I heard the reason why the trade is talking so long is that VKG wants his mental coach as well now. That’s gonna cost them a 1st though.

  12. Dave says:

Wait…we got more for Mantha (2nd and a 4th round picks) than Ottawa got for Tarasenko (a 4th this year and a 3rd next year)? Am I missing something?

  13. DWGie26 says:

This is a good (not great move). We had to make a deal and I am fine with the return. No doubt GMBM is moving his pending UFA’s. This was a good start.

Was hoping we would do more today than just Sandin before the Pittsburg game. Will be interesting to see if anyone is held out tomorrow (other than Dowd who certainly won’t play).
