Baby Pens Score Game-Winning Goal With Less Than A Second Remaining In Regulation, Down Bears, 2-1

The Hershey Bears fell to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 2-1 Friday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre. The Bears gave up the winning goal with less than a second remaining in regulation. The loss drops the Bears record to 7-3-0 on the season.

LINEUP

Hunter Shepard got the start between the pipes for the visiting Bears. Joel Blomqvist got the start in goal for the Penguins. The forward lines and defensive pairs for the Bears:

FIRST PERIOD

The Bears opened the scoring for the fifth time in 10 games with a power play tally from Mike Vecchione (4) at 6:27. Mike Sgarbossa (8) and Chase Priskie (5) had the helpers.

And that would be all of the scoring in the first 20 minutes. Shots were tied 7-7. Hershey was 1 for 2 and Wilkes-Barre 0 for 1 on the power play in the opening stanza.


SECOND PERIOD

The Penguins tied the game late in the middle frame with a tally from Alex Nylander (2) at 19:23. Jansen Harkins (3) and Dmitri Samorukov (1) had the assists.

And that would be it for the middle frame. Shots were once again tied, 6-6 in the second period, and 13-13 after 40 minutes of play. The Baby Pens were 0 for 2 and the Bears 1 for 4 on the power play after two periods.


THIRD PERIOD

The Penguins notched the game-winning goal with less than one second remaining in regulation. The goal was setup by a turnover by Ivan Miroshnichenko in the Bears zone. Marc Johnstone (2) let a shot go from the point that floated past Shepard for the victory. Jansen Harkins (4) and Dmitri Samorukov (2) had the helpers.

And that would be the final. Shots finished 24-20 in favor of the Penguins. Shepard went 22-for-24 in his first loss of the season for Hershey; Blomqvist went 19-for-20 in the victory for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Hershey was 1-for-5 on the power play; the Penguins went 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
