NHL Trade Deadline Officially Set For March 8

With the 2023-24 NHL season quickly approaching, critical offseason dates are starting to become official. The NHL trade deadline is officially set for Mar. 8, 2024 at 3 p.m. ET.

Last year, the Washington Capitals were sellers for the first time in a while. Washington made four trades during last year’s deadline. First, the Caps trade long-time defenseman Dmitry Orlov and forward Garnet Hathaway to the Boston Bruins in exchange for forward Craig Smith, a 2023 first-round pick, a 2024 third-round pick and a 2025 second-round pick.

The Caps then used the 2023 first-round pick acquired in the Orlov trade to acquire defenseman Rasmus Sandin from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defenseman Erik Gustafsson.

The Capitals also made two smaller trades to acquire draft capital. On Feb. 28, forward Marcus Johansson was dealt to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for a 2024 third-round pick. Then on Mar. 1, two days before the 2023 trade deadline, center Lars Eller was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick.
