Setting the stage
The crowd packed into Nationwide Arena this evening — a turnout expected to feature plenty of traveling Washington supporters — may witness a genuine slice of the sport’s past. For the legendary Ovechkin, tonight stands as his lone remaining guaranteed appearance, and it arrives against Columbus, the very club he faced in his debut the day his celebrated run launched: October 5, 2005.
Standings-wise, there is nothing on the line for either side anymore; a Philadelphia win Monday had already bounced both teams from the playoff race. Still, the evening could end a remarkable era for the franchise and wrap up a career as storied as any the sport has produced.
What Ovechkin has given the franchise — and arguably even more, the fan base — is enormous, which is why every shift he takes tonight deserves to be appreciated. A city rarely produces a true singular sporting figure, and for the District, The Great 8 sits at the very top of that short list. Should this genuinely be the finale, he ought to be sent off with the loudest possible celebration.
There’s a certain symmetry to it, too: a possible career-ending appearance doubles as game No. 82 on his schedule this year. A model of reliability throughout his time, he is closing out the initial complete 82-game slate he has logged since 2017-18. Now aged 40, surely there’s another season left in the tank.
