Wild card hopes fading for Washington as the Metro's third seed emerges as the likelier route

Only one realistic playoff route now appears open to Washington. A regulation defeat absorbed by the Philadelphia Flyers on this night, though, has preserved a flicker of hope for the Caps.

On its home sheet, Little Caesars Arena, Detroit handled Philadelphia by a 6-3 score. Those two points sustained Detroit's faint bid toward a second wild-card berth, while leaving Philadelphia's grip on the Metro's third seed considerably shakier.

Among the other meaningful M3 outcomes on the evening, the Islanders kept themselves in the mix by topping Toronto 5-3, dominating the shot count 44-16 during Pete DeBoer's first game running the bench.

Columbus, for its part, was hammered 5-0 by Buffalo.

As the 2025-26 campaign winds toward its close, four clubs remain in the fight for the coveted third slot in the division: Philadelphia (92 points), the Islanders (91), Columbus (90), and Washington (89).

With three contests apiece still to play, each club has the following ceiling on its point total:

  • Philadelphia — could top out at 98
  • Islanders — capped at 97
  • Columbus — limited to 96
  • Washington — maxing at 95

A three-point gap separates Washington from Philadelphia at present, yet sweeping its final trio — provided no rival climbs beyond 95 — would hand the team a postseason opening. Having already locked up that Regulation Wins edge against the division's other three contenders, the Caps would slip in on any 95-point deadlock with them.

The closing slate for each side breaks down this way:

  • Philadelphia: at Winnipeg, then Carolina, then Montreal
  • Islanders: Ottawa, then Montreal, then Carolina
  • Columbus: at Montreal, then Boston, then Washington
  • Washington: at Pittsburgh, then Pittsburgh, then at Columbus

None of Washington's matchups are easy, but the night did deliver a bit of welcome news. After a 5-2 win over New Jersey, Pittsburgh secured the Metro's second seed and now has nothing left to chase down the stretch.

The Caps meet Pittsburgh in a weekend home-and-home set on back-to-back nights. Should Washington reach the playoffs through the M3 slot, the Penguins would be its opening-round opponent.

While the divisional results were largely positive, Washington sits on the verge of elimination from the East's final wild-card position.

Beating Florida 5-1 pushed Ottawa's total up to 94.

Picking up two additional points across their last three contests would lock the spot up for the Senators, who also hold a two-game edge over Washington in regulation wins. Barring a total Ottawa meltdown, then, that berth looks all but claimed.
