Setting the stage
This evening's contest in Toronto pits two clubs that are both long shots to reach the postseason, so the more subtle threads are where the attention lands.
Ilya Protas makes his league debut for the Capitals, lining up between Tom Wilson and his elder brother Aliaksei. Weighing in together at roughly 700 pounds total, the threesome ranks as the heaviest forward trio found across the NHL. Though only 19, his summons has felt long overdue considering the dominant AHL run that Little Pro put together this year.
By my read, Ilya has looked big-league-ready ever since the back end of last October and likely would have filled in smoothly during the long stretch that Pierre-Luc Dubois missed with injury. A bolder front office might even have nudged this campaign in another direction.
Tonight, the hope is simply that Ilya flashes his obvious skill and shows how dangerous he can be around the crease.
This could also be Alex Ovechkin's last appearance on Canadian ice should he decide to retire this offseason. Will Toronto mark the occasion?
Tonight's faceoff comes shortly past 7:30, with Craig Laughlin and Joe Beninati handling the call for the Monumental network's telecast.

Essential reading from RMNB
- The captain will resolve his playing future over the summer, with nothing expected to be announced until after the campaign wraps
- Washington has tabbed Ovechkin as its 2026 pick to receive the Bill Masterton hardware, a trophy recognizing perseverance and dedication
- Let's give the Caps' final road trip to Columbus the feel of a home crowd this season
- Pressed by Toronto's media on whether his career is ending, Ovechkin fielded the pointed questions and admitted uncertainty
- The roster grapples with their captain's possible exit, conceding it would be a mournful moment whenever he finally retires

Opening frame
Here we go. Aliaksei Protas opens at the dot next to Ovechkin and, again, his younger brother Ilya.
Near the net, John Tavares bowls over Ilya Protas. That hit might count as his welcome to big-league life.
Cole Hutson dings a shot off iron.
Stolarz turns aside the follow-up with his left pad but looks to have seriously tweaked his groin or knee on the play. A rough piece of luck.
At the 2:34 mark, Joseph Woll enters the game as the replacement.
Woll turns away strong chances from Alex Ovechkin as well as Leonard.
Catching Leonard (cast here as the holiday rabbit) high with the stick, Max Domi draws blood. He's first given two penalties' worth of minor time as the zebras take a look.
🔋
Power play
Penalty — Domi, high-sticking, 7:53 (two minutes)
The Caps fail to convert on the extra man.
On a two-on-one, Anthony Beauvillier saucers a beautiful feed over to Strome, who one-times it home behind Woll. The Toronto-born center scores!
🚨
Washington up 1-0
Strome (19) finds the net at 13:22, set up by Beauvillier (13) and Fehervary (20).
🦓
Penalty kill
Penalty — Leonard whistled for holding, at 18:32
At the first break: Washington is in front 1-0, with shots level at 7-7.
---
Middle frame
The puck drops.
Fresh from the penalty box, Leonard takes a feed from Wilson and rifles a brutal shot past the glove of Woll. NASTY.
🚨
Washington up 2-0
Leonard (18) buries it at the 0:40 mark, with Wilson (30) earning the helper.
Logan with an enormous stop.
Martin Fehervary banks the puck in off the skate of McCabe.
🚨
Washington up 3-0
Fehervary (5) lights it up at 2:53, assisted by Strome (38) and by Sourdif, who logs his 19th helper.
Myers gets it past the Thompson glove, but it caroms off the bar and stays out of the cage.
🔋
Power play
Penalty — Domi whistled for hooking, at 5:02
At the second break: The Caps are ahead 3-0, with shots even at 16-16.
---
Final frame
The puck drops.
Ilya Protas picks up his first career point in the NHL when Cole Hutson buries an empty-netter! The primary helper goes to his brother, Aliaksei.
🚨
Washington up 4-0
Into the vacated cage, Hutson notches his third of the year at 16:10; the helpers are credited to Aliaksei (26) and Ilya (1) of the Protas family.
🦓
Penalty kill
Penalty — Leonard, hooking, 18:17
Washington whitewashes Toronto, 4-0.
Caps top the Leafs 4-0 as Logan Thompson finally records a shutout
