On Saturday night, Tom Wilson proved he remains willing to trade punches with the league's most imposing tough guys.
His foe this time, Tampa Bay's Curtis Douglas, checked in at 6-foot-9 and 242 pounds, and it was the towering forward who dragged the Capitals' assistant captain toward a tilt as 1:35 remained on the second-period clock.
Pursuing Wilson through the Lightning's end of the rink, Douglas latched onto the Capitals winger's stick to prevent any escape, then dropped his own mitts before his opponent had even registered that a tilt was beginning.
With his hands now free, Wilson unloaded a string of firm lefts, a thunderous right hand, and capped it off using an MMA-style throw to seal a lopsided victory. Then he flung his helmet down and locked eyes with the whole Tampa Bay bench while heading toward the tunnel leading to Washington's room.
Officials kept a tight watch and gave Douglas an instigator minor of two minutes, a fighting major of five, and a misconduct worth 10. Wilson's only infraction was a five-minute fighting penalty, which handed the Capitals a man advantage.
The bad blood likely traced back to a Wilson check delivered earlier in the period that hurt Lightning standout Nikita Kucherov. That said, the bigger problem for Kucherov seemed to be his collision with an official caused by the same play.
No infraction was assessed to Wilson for the contact, and Kucherov retreated to the road locker room and sat out the remainder of regulation.
As he's grown older and taken on a larger role in Washington, Wilson has scaled back how often he fights. Heading into Saturday, his single previous bout this year had come versus Buffalo's Jordan Greenway back on the first of November. Wilson hasn't topped five scraps in one campaign since 2021-22.
Douglas, despite playing seven games fewer this season, has already piled up four fights. Back in 2023-24 with the AHL's Tucson Roadrunners, his career-best penalty total reached 148 minutes.
