Away from her duties hosting Capitals telecasts on the Monumental Sports Network, Alexa Landestoy has begun returning to her roots.
She announced via social channels on Friday that FOX had signed her on to work the sidelines during the college gridiron season ahead.
Across her excited, emoji-filled note, Landestoy described it as a meaningful occasion, remembering a childhood spent beside the gridiron and voicing her excitement at rejoining @cfbonfox. She told Caps fans not to fret, since @mayhockey16 remained tied to her, confirmed her continued presence on @monsportsnet and @nhlnetwork, and explained she was simply adding one more beloved sport to her workload.
For her first outing she covered a coast-to-coast telecast featuring Baylor versus Auburn, teaming with Jason Benetti, a veteran in the play-by-play chair — who, despite the similar name, has no family tie to Joe Beninati — plus Robert Griffin III, the quarterback who once played for the Commanders in Washington.
Hyping the game online, Griffin framed the Auburn-Baylor clash as Friday night lights, urging fans to come along with him, @jasonbenetti, and @alexalandestoy over on @CFBONFOX for what he billed as an SEC-versus-Big 12 battle.
The trio, according to FOX Sports, will remain together throughout the entirety of the 2025 college slate.
Issuing a statement, RGIII expressed that it was a privilege to come aboard at FOX Sports, saying he looked forward to honoring the game while partnering with top-tier professionals to share stories of consequence. His goal, he said, involves supplying a genuine viewpoint on each telecast — letting audiences grasp the on-field events plus why they carry weight and what they signify for young men reaching for their dreams. Lining up with Benetti, for whom he professed great respect, as well as Landestoy, would be a special thing, he added.
Her first on-air hit, found at the 37:25 point of the clip below, arrived within the telecast's opening minutes, delivered from down at field level inside McLane Stadium, as she relayed a striking story concerning Auburn's placekicker.
FOX College Football promoted the #OpeningDrive of the year between @AuburnFootball and @BUFootball, telling fans they could stream the entire contest in 4K on FOX and the FOX Sports App.
Acknowledging the two men in the booth, Landestoy said she was thrilled and glad to take part, then pointed out that the Tigers faithful would feel relief upon spotting Alex McPherson, their starter at the kicking spot, available. A year earlier, she explained, the program ranked at the very bottom nationally for field-goal accuracy, although McPherson sat out a chunk of that stretch while contending with ongoing gastrointestinal trouble that had dropped his weight. Tagged as a game-time call that night, he joined pregame warmups, and the word she'd gotten pegged his effective range near 20 yards, with longer attempts going to Towns McGough. She cast it as an uplifting account of a young man devoted to the sport, eager to compete beside his brothers.
Sending it back upstairs, the play-by-play voice noted that the kicker had his large-intestine surgery completed the prior December — an offseason step taken so he'd be cleared to play.
The position fast-tracks Landestoy's rapid rise through sports journalism while bringing her full circle to the network and the game in which she first built her name. In college she handled coverage of the TCU football squad and logged a stint patrolling sidelines for the Southwest branch of FOX Sports before her hiring by the Washington arm of NBC Sports.
The fall ahead is jammed for Landestoy, who plans to keep up her hosting role at the NHL Network even as she partners on either end of Capitals telecasts with Alan May, the cherished ex-enforcer and mullet legend. Marking the announcement online, May proclaimed just how delighted he felt for his elite, hugely talented broadcasting colleague and closest pal.
A standout in the comparatively modest hockey-media space, the well-spoken, sharp, and likable Landestoy figures to draw plenty of interest from leading broadcasters should she ever opt to commit fully to football.
