Across the eight seasons ahead, Mitch Marner has now figured out where his hockey home will be.
Per Chris Johnston, an insider in the hockey world, Marner inked a pact worth $96 million spanning eight years with Toronto's Maple Leafs, only to be shipped off afterward to Vegas in a hefty sign-and-trade. For its role in setting up that maximum-length deal just ahead of Marner reaching unrestricted free agency on Tuesday, the Leafs will reportedly bring back forward Nicolas Roy.
Posting to social media, Johnston indicated the agreement spans eight years at a $12M annual cap hit with #VGK, arranged as a sign-and-trade alongside Toronto.
Over 81 regular-season outings with the Leafs last year, the 28-year-old put together a line of 27 goals and 75 assists totaling 102 points. He tacked on a further 11 helpers and two goals — 13 points — through 13 postseason contests, then watched Toronto absorb yet another disheartening round-two loss, dispatched by Florida's Panthers.
Having made three All-Star appearances in the NHL, Marner stood as the headline talent up for grabs, reaching unrestricted free agency for the initial occasion of his playing days. He's Vegas-bound now that a six-season Toronto contract carrying a cap charge of $10.9 million has run its course.
The roster Marner joins in Vegas carries the unique status of being the latest team, the Panthers of Florida excepted, to capture a Stanley Cup crown. Ever since hoisting the club's debut championship back during 2023, the Knights have been unable to advance beyond round two across their two most recent postseason appearances.
Pairing Marner with Jack Eichel, the team's leading point producer, looks like the likely plan in Vegas, forming a duo that could stand among hockey's elite top units for years ahead. Eichel, for his part, racked up 28 goals plus 66 assists, good for 94 points, over 77 appearances during 2024-25.
