According to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, the Washington Capitals will scratch defenseman Dmitry Orlov and right-wing Garnet Hathaway vs. the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday (7 PM ET, NBC Sports Washington in-market, ESPN+ out-of-market) for “trade-related reasons.” The 31-year-olds can become both unrestricted free agents on July 1.
#Caps defenseman Dmitry Orlov and forward Garnet Hathaway are being held out from tonight’s game versus Anaheim for trade-related reasons.

Orlov has earned three goals, 19 points, a +2 rating, 51.45% five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, 50.83% five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and 50.13% five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage in 43 games this season. He carries a $5.1 million cap hit.
Washington and Orlov have reportedly struggled to come to terms on a contract extension.
Defenseman John Carlson is the only Washington blueliner with a contract for next season.
Hathaway, who comes with a $1.75 million NHL salary cap charge, has tallied nine goals and 16 points in 59 games.
The 2023 NHL Trade Deadline is in one week from Friday at 3 PM ET.
Washington, who has lost five straight in regulation, enters Thursday’s game two points back of the Florida Panthers for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference with a game in hand.
Pending unrestricted free agent center Lars Eller, left-wing Conor Sheary, left-wing Marcus Johansson, in addition defensemen Erik Gustafsson, Trevor Van Riemsdyk, and Nick Jensen are all expected to suit up on Thursday. Washington has four more games until the NHL trade deadline.

It’s happening! Will make for a full remainder of the season, but maybe give the team a better look next season.
Well, it was fun while it lasted. Hathaway is a bit of a surprise.
Lavi loves that 4th line. He may have little say at this point.
Edmonton?
Seems like the Gruesome Twosome of Leonsis and McLellan are finally waking up and smelling the coffee. This train wreck isn’t gonna be saved. Pack it in, and look forward to the draft lottery
IMHO we have quite a few passengers who are way ahead of Hathaway?!
His stock has never been higher. Lets see what we get first
Agree, when healthy, that 4th line was formidable. Also agree with response above. Let’s see how it shakes out.
I know Edmonton badly wants a defenseman. The hot rumor for a few weeks was EK65, but that ain’t happening, for $$$ reasons. Orlov is affordable, and will shore up their back line. They don’t need more offense. They need to keep the puck out of their own net.
Picks or player(s) return?
I’d want picks personally. A similar package (at least) to what Montreal got for Chiarot last year: 1st, 4th, middling prospect.
I have a doctors appointment right at the trade deadline, next Friday. I don’t know what would be worse: finding out I’m dying of cancer, or hearing that BMac traded our 1st round pick in a deep draft, for another Mantha type player.
Just kidding…….a little
Chychrun also being held out tonight…again.
Arizona said they were holding him out till the deadline
Kings are a possible destination for Orlov also. Some yayhoos on Twitter seem to think he’s gonna go to an East team (Rangers or Toronto), but I hope BMac has the sense to send him out West
Here we go!
Hathaway to Boston per Freidman.
Scoarlov TOO!
