The Capitals’ captain has been on a tear in recent weeks, and was also named to the Metropolitan Division NHL All-Star Game team tonight as well.
Next player he can pass up in points is Stan Mikita who had 1467 and ranks #15. He’d have a ways to go to catch up to Paul Coffey in 14th place who had 1531 points. (Next year’s milestone.)
If Ovi scores just one more goal this season, he’ll have 30 goals and he will tie the record for most 30 goal seasons. If he gets at least 11, he’ll hold the record for most 40 goal seasons. If he gets at least 21, he’ll hold the record for most 50 goal seasons.
Would be nice to see him get 21 more but being realistic i see him getting 15-to maybe 20. If he gets 20 more that leaves him 65 shy of #99. So that would put him on pace to get the record in early 2024/25 Season. Give him 45 goals next season that means all he would need would to pass #99 would be 21 the following season and that should happen around Christmas!! Ovie giving his team, the fans and the league a nice Christmas present. That means he has what is left of that season and all of the 25/26 season to get as close to 1000 If he had not missed almost 2 full seasons with strikes and covid he would have passed #99 by now and would easily passed 1000.
Well laid out. As hot as he is right now, he’s had cold stretches, through no fault of his, better teams just key on him more efficiently. I think it’s fair to say he finishes with 50+ this year, and your 45 estimate for next year is reasonable.
Sentimentally speaking, Ovi deserves to get the 50 goal seasons record. He was at 48 goals when the 2019-20 season was stopped and almost certainly the record would already have been his if not for the pandemic.
55 goals for the Great 8 this season. You can bet the mortgage on that.
