Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has had himself a season already, becoming the NHL’s second all-time leading Goal scorer along with a number of other milestones surpassed. On Tuesday night versus the Buffalo Sabres, the 37-year old added another goaltender to an already-long list of victims and continued his torrid streak of scoring.
After finishing the calendar year 2022 with a hat trick, Ovechkin picked up where he left off in the Caps’ first game of 2023 with another multi-goal performance, the 165th such instance of his career.
Alex Ovechkin scores his second goal of the game and his 28th of the season to give the Capitals a 4-3 lead. It marks Ovechkin’s seventh multi-goal game of the season and the 165th of his career. Only Wayne Gretzky (189) has more multi-goal games in NHL history.

The first goal of the game came at the 16:46 mark of the second period, on an assist from countryman Evgeny Kuznetsov.

Ovechkin’s first tally, the 27th of the 2022-23 regular season and 807th of his career, marked his third straight contest lighting the lamp. Buffalo goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen also became the 167th different goalie on which The Great Eight has scored.

The second goal of the night for No. 8 came seven minutes and ten seconds into the third period, on assist from Conor Sheary. After the goal, Ovechkin made his way to the glass to celebrate with son Sergei.

Ovechkin now has 28 goals on the season and 808 of his career. Only Wayne Gretzky, who Ovechkin is now 87 goals shy of passing for first all-time, has more multi-goal games than the 2004 first overall pick, who has eight goals in his past five games.
