Nicklas Backstrom: “It’s Gonna Be Physical. Obviously We Have Guys To Play Physical”

The Washington Capitals held their first postseason practice Sunday morning and held their first postseason media session following practice. Nicklas Backstrom met with the media and discussed the first round series with the Florida Panthers that begins on Tuesday in Florida.

Backstrom knows it will be a big challenge, but thinks there are certain components of the Capitals game that need to step up.

”Obviously a great team we’re facing. Should be a good challenge for us. I think this time of year, we really need to focus on playing good, defensively. That’s where you’re gonna win games, especially against this team. You gotta be disciplined and make sure we’re doing great out there for 60 minutes.”

Backstrom also feels that physicality will play a big part in the series.

“It’s important. Regular season is one thing and playoffs is one thing. It’s a totally different game. It’s gonna be physical. Obviously we have guys to play physical. I think that’s gonna be key for us, too, starting off the right way.”

Backstrom was asked about playoff experience and what that might bring to the table for the Capitals in their first round series with the Panthers.

”I think it’s something you realize when you’re a little older. It doesn’t matter where you are seeded. Everyone is in the playoffs. Anything can happen. Just knowing that, and that as of right now the series is tied. We believe in ourselves and we’re going to do everything we can to win this series,” said Backstrom.

Backstrom was asked about the Capitals success on the road this season. He acknowledged the team was excellent on the road during the regular season, but said that doesn’t matter now.

”It’s just the way we play, I guess. And the setup and the system,” said Backstrom. “Now it’s starting. Regular season doesn’t really matter. This is the time you need to be good on the road.”

Backstrom said he feels “good” and that he is “ready to go.”
