Washington Capitals prospect Joaquim Lemay has been named the week six NCHC Defenseman of the Week following his three-point weekend against the LIU Sharks. This is the second time this season that the 2021 fourth-round pick has been named the NCHC defenseman of the week. He was dubbed the title back in week two of the college hockey season.
Sophomore blueliner Jo Lemay has been tabbed as the Week 6 NCHC Defenseman of the Week after a three-point weekend against the Long Island Sharks.
Lemay assisted on the Mavericks second goal of the game on Friday night helping set up Ty Mueller’s power play goal, 36 seconds into the 2nd period. On Saturday night, Lemay once again helped set up Mueller for a goal that put the Mavericks up 2-0 in the 2ndperiod. 52 seconds into overtime, Lemay ripped home a one-timer to secure a weekend sweep over the Sharks for his third goal of the campaign. The Quebec, Canada native registered 10 shots on and was a +1 in two games last weekend.

This marks the third weekly award of the season for the Mavericks and second of the year for Lemay. The Omaha defenseman was named Defenseman of the Week in Week 2 while Griffin Ludtke captured the same award last week in Week 5.
Lemay’s six points currently ranks second on the team in points and 10th among NCHC blueliners.
Lemay and the Mavericks head to Denver this weekend to take on the No. 3 Pioneers to resume NCHC play.

If this kid makes All-NCHC this year, or any year, that’s a win for the Caps scouting/drafting process. There are a lot of guys drafted much higher than the 4th round in that league. Of course just because he scores in college doesn’t mean he’ll be a great NHL defenseman… Have you guys gotten enough eyeball time on him to see if he can actually defend as well?
I’ve seen him play a bit. Defensively he has some growing to do. But it’s easier to teach an offensive player defense, than the other way around.
I haven’t seen him play at all, but I suspect someone here has. And I am wondering the same thing. Is Lemay a sneaky surprise find for the Caps? At 6’1, 184 he has an NHL frame. Scored well in USHL as well, so there is room for optimism here, but lots of time left in the developmental cycle.
I have seen him play a bit. He was drafted as an overager, at 19.He’s got good offensive instincts. He’s still got some developing to do. Don’t expect him to take John Carlson’s place next year. He’s got some baking to do in Hershey, probably for a couple of years. But there’s reason for optimism, that he’ll make the NHL.
Thanks for the color. Agree he isn’t likely an NHL defensemen at 22, but could be that 24-26 type.
Speaking of which i saw Iorio turned 21. Would like to see him be a 22 year old NHL defenseman.
