The Washington Capitals announced on Tuesday morning that they have recalled forward Joe Snively from Hershey. Snively has recorded three points (1g, 2a) in eight games with Washington this season. In 20 games with Hershey this season, Snively has recorded 16 points (7g, 9a).

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have recalled forward Joe Snively from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today.
Snively has recorded three points (1g, 2a) in eight games with Washington this season. The Herndon, Virginia, native became the first Virginia-born player to play for the Capitals in franchise history last season. In 12 games in 2021-22, Snively recorded seven points (4g, 3a), including a three-point effort (2g, 1a) on Feb. 10, 2022 against the Montreal Canadiens. Snively became one of 15 rookies in franchise history to record at least seven points in his first 10 games. In 20 career NHL games with the Capitals, Snively has recorded 10 points (5g, 5a).
In 20 games with Hershey this season, Snively has recorded 16 points (7g, 9a). The 5’9″, 179-pound forward ranks first on the Bears in shooting percentage (20.6) and fourth in points per game (0.80). Snively recorded 38 points (15g, 23a) in 35 games with Hershey in 2021-22 and ranked third on the team in points and fourth in goals. During the 2020-21 season, Snively registered 17 points (6g, 11a) in 30 games for the Bears. In 139 career AHL games with Hershey, Snively has recorded 102 points (42g, 60a).
Snively trained at MedStar Capitals Iceplex during his youth and was a participant in Washington’s Little Caps program.
Snively, 27, was never drafted but signed a two-year deal with the Capsitals in 2019 for $925,000 per year. The Capitals re-signed Snively to a one-year, two-way contract extension on June 3, 2021 and re-signed him to a two-year deal on March 16, 2022. He will be a restricted free agent in 2024-25.

It’s not clear if the move is to give Snively some much deserved playing time, or in response to yesterday’s absences from practice. Sonny Milano (non-Covid illness) and Alex Ovechkin (maintenance day) did not practice on Monday.

The Capitals face the Rangers tonight. The team is not holding a morning skate, but head coach Peter Laviolette is meeting with the media at 4:45PM. We should learn more at that point.

Yeah, so awful that the Caps only gave him 8 games, but that 1 goal projected to 10 for the year so AHL seemed like the right call. There are no gifts at the Caps level. If the Caps AHL guys (and fans) want the NHL team to keep guys up that score a goal every 8 or 10 games, you should root for Arizona or similar…
Let’s see if he can come out and be effective like last year and TAKE a spot, not given one because Cap fans seemingly love guys that have good stories more so than production.

It feels like sometimes the Gm makes moves just so it appears that he is doing something to earn his pay. As we already know what Mantha can do, not much and doesn’t matter what line he is on, and looks like Sheary will not be resigned then why not play Protas and Snively so that they can not only get experience but see if they will fit this team next season?
I realize that Teds goal is to get Ovie th record but as a team game others deserve consideration also. If Ted wants the record so bad then why not play Ovie every other shift or every 3rd shift and force feed him the puck and take 25 shots a game. Like in the old days when there were bonuses given for hits maybe Ted should consider offering bonuses to other goalies for allowing Ovie a goal to get the record quicker and thus end this silly retool and get back to real hockey business of rebuilding this team and becoming a legitimate contender again!!
He scored 1 goal in 8 games…thats enough of a chance for me. If you are a fan that loves AHL players stories more than production at NHL level, perhaps rooting for Arizona or similar would be more fun. Professional leagues are not rec where everyone gets a trophy because we like them. TAKE a spot or enjoy the AHL which isn’t an awful life by any means. Sheesh, if several of y’all were baseball fans you’d be rooting for guys that can’t hit .200 to get promoted all year…mahalo!!

That comes out to 27 goals over an 82 game season. I’d be thrilled to have the kind of production out of any of our 3rd or 4th line players, or for that matter, out of any of our top line players not named Ovi this year!
What you’re writing is really disingenuous, Horny. If you look game by game, Snively has been productive, with 3 points, in his last 4 games. You keep trumpeting that 1 goal in 8 games Stat. Well, what about Craig Smith? 2 points in 7 games, while Snively has 3 points in 8. So doesn’t Smith have to earn his place in the lineup?

I really like Snively as a reliable depth player, injuries happen and he’s a great guy to call up in those circumstances. I don’t think he’s better than Milano who is probably the closest comparison in playing style on the current roster.
Can you go away. Deserves a chance more so than Sheary or Mantha or NAK or Backstrom or Eller, etc. played well. Added speed and energy. Just because your HC doesn’t trust young guys doesn’t mean they haven’t earned it.
Totally agree!! Mantha has had all year to show what he can and cant do on all 4 lines so time to let other players have a shot. Truly sad that what is important to the owner is not winning, improving players or even being a legitimate contender for the Cup but having 1 player set a personal record.
