Defenseman Rasmus Sandin, who was acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday, and defensemen Vincent Iorio and Gabriel Carlsson, who were called up from AHL Hershey on Friday, are all set to make their Capitals debuts against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday (6 PM ET, NBC Sports Washington+ in-market, ESPN+ out-of-market).
Iorio and Carlsson were recalled by the Capitals after Nick Jensen (upper body) and Martin Fehervary (lower body) suffered injuries in the Capitals last game against the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday.
According to Mike Vogel, excluding opening nights, the team has never had three defensemen play their first game for the team in same game.
Even including opening nights, it’s only happened thrice previously:
’74-75 natch, and four of ’em: (Joly, Lundrigan, Mikkelson, G. Smith)
’82-83: (Engblom, Langway, Stevens)
’05-06: (Biron, Heward, Muir) 2/2— Mike Vogel (@VogsCaps) March 4, 2023
Goaltender Darcy Kuemper will make his fourth consecutive start on Saturday in San Jose.
Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette met with the media when the team arrived at the arena in San Jose:

McIlrath is in Hershey…
I thought that was a paper transaction, so he’d be on Hershey’s roster for the playoffs. He didn’t play last night
